Statin "discussion" with my diabetic consultant

I went for my diabetes checkup (have been diabetic for 40 years). HbA1c was 5.8, cholesterol was 4.2, all organs are functioning normally & my feet are problem free. My consultant says "I can't find anything wrong with you. There must be something I can find. I tell you what, let's put you on statins." Why? is my question. She says because your cholesterol should be 2. It takes another 40 minutes "talking" about statins before I could leave the appointment! Why are statins being pushed so much?

What should be 2?

Your TC looks fine at 4.2 @Hamster_House, these are the target cholesterol levels that they want people with diabetes to aim for:

  • Your total cholesterol level should be below 4.0mmol/l.
  • LDL levels should be less than 2.0mmol/l.
  • HDL levels should be 1.0mmol/l or above in men and 1.2mmol/l or above in women.
  • Triglyceride levels should be 1.7mmol/l or less.

2?

Was she joking?

Brilliant results by the way, especially after 40 years. She should be giving you a gold medal. Your cholesterol is fine.

I can't seem to reply (error message) so I'll post my thanks to all your replies:) regarding yesterday's statin discussion. The consultant meant my total cholesterol should be 2. I didn't agree & declined her persistent offer. Thanks again.
