Statin use and progression of diabetes.

My GP and I have reached a compromise, He has marked my records as being allergic to statins, and I agree to accept a prescription for Ezetimibe (note the wording here) whixh is not a statin, but does lower LDL. Both of us save face.

Every much in the same seat. Started Ezetimibe 12 weeks ago and having bloods done in two days time. BG generally higher, bending down to fridge and things leads to dizzy spells and feeling very tired most of the time.

Why?
Not sure.

So does water.
But not often

black tarry stools
bleeding gums
bloating
blood in urine or stools

darkened urine
fast heartbeat
fever
gaseous abdominal pain
general tiredness or weakness
indigestion
large, hive-like swelling on face, eyelids, lips, tongue, throat, hands, legs, feet, sex organs
loss of appetite
light-colored stools

or
Fever
headache
muscle pain
runny nose
sore throat
muscle cramps or spasms
muscular tenderness, wasting or weakness
nausea
pains in stomach, side or abdomen, possibly radiating to the back
pinpoint red spots on skin
recurrent fever

upper right abdominal pain
vomiting
yellow eyes or skin

Yes Drugs.com does go to town here. Black tarry stools and light coloured stools. Runny nose. blocked nose. Constipation and the other extreme in the same list. Most medication gets this treatment nowadays. My antibiotic has two pages of these effects too. Very similar list. I find it very disconcerting, since the actual reported and verified side effects are not obvious.

I do suffer from a runny nose and sneezing. This can interfere with my sinus, giving me a headache, and then feeding tnto the eustacian tubes and causing earwax. This in turn leads to loss of balance and dizzy turns when the head tilts suddenly. So those seem consequential to me.

To parody the USA films, Gas causes bloating, upper torso discomfort, constipation and the other. so again many of those other effects may follow just one cause. The blood in urine is a difficult one. As we age we leak more, so it may be just kidneys being interferred with a bit more.

I am inclined to think I may be suffering this latter effect, since my eGFR has fallen through thte floor since I started using ezetimibe. I also have a runny nose and sneezes, but I think that has other causes such as badly fitting dentures, and my daughter sanding the floors in the house for the last couple of months.

I did make an obvious observation in my post above, in that the doc gives me a prescription, and I have the option of taking it and ignoring it. Certainly since taking it my LDL dropped noticeably and my doc was pleased. I will decide next week what I do with my next dossette box.

PS my stools are black, and gave the nurses in the hospital a fright, but then I am on iron supplements. They also have a similar list of problems so if I want pale stools, then that is several meds I will have to drop. Think that would cause me other probs though.

I was on statins for some years before I ever got diabetes and I now believe they were one of the causes, though my (unwanted and more recent) too high carb diet was probably the final straw. For a while I had a different GP for diabetic support, and he agreed that I could stop taking them, and I saw an immediate drop in my glucose levels.

I feel I bent to the pressure from my GP to try Ezetimibe and looking back I am a bit annoyed with myself as he said the chance of "something bad" happening to me compared to "others" was 46% and think this was relative, with no other numbers actually mentioned. He did also state that it only works about 50% of the time!!!

My 95 year old mother in law had a recent trip to hospital following a fall. They dropped her iron pill and the difference in the BM's is amazing.... no longer black pellets.... though not so easy to clean up! Sorry if that is too much information.

Had my bloods done yesterday lunch and the results were on line when I woke up.
HbA1c not really changed, 40 from 41

TC 5.2 from 8.2
Trig 0.8, no change
HDL 1.8 from 1.7
LDL* 3.0 from 6.1

* calculated.

Seems okay. Time might tell.
