statin

Re: ststin

Hi .
It will depend on your own medical conditions, your GP will be able to make the choice according to your needs and medical conditions.
Quite a few persons use and take simvastatin , ezetrol , statins but it really is best to follow your GP's professional advice.
As not one pill suits all.... !

Excuse my disagreement Anna but almost every doctor will prescribe simvastatin first as it is out of licence and so cheaper than other statins, atorvastatin will be out of licence soon, this year I believe so it will also be cheaper then as anyone will be able to produce and market it.

Doctors generally prescribe whatever is the cheapest drug first and then swap it if side effects are encountered, it makes good financial sense when you think about it, why offer a more expensive treatment when a cheaper alternative is available.

Hi , okay dokey guys...
So ' springer11 ' you're GP may well dish out the cheapest statin firstly then progress to more expensive ones if you experience side effects?
Sid/grazer - what do members do in this case ?
Turn up at doc's spouting please do NOT give me the 'cheapest' drug/products first ???
It's clearly a system you enter under the NHS.... Cheapest , middle price range , then more/most expensive [when no options left]
Its the same with diabetes clinic system, metformin is always dished out first!
Anna.x :D

Sorry Anna, didn't quite get that. Didn't mean to cause offence if we did! When you turn up at the docs, you don't do anything other than take what you're given unless, as you say, you get side effects. Or if you know there's a better alternative and want to make a case for it. Just a fact that you will get cheapest first quite sensibly unless they don't work. With Metformin, you get that first because it IS the first-line drug, - or did you mean you get the cheapest version of Metformin? That's also true and, again I guess, understandably so.

This is exactly what happened with me - simvastatin gave me aching muscles (in my arms) so I stopped taking it and at my next GP appointment he suggested atorvastatin, which I've been on for about a year. My cholesterol was 'fine' before but is 'excellent' now apparently (I really must write down the numbers next time),
