anyone had this? put on statins just before Christmas (I see the papers today say 1 in 4 uk adults should be on them!!) 40gm strength.. Instant doubling of blood sugar levels. Came off them and back to normal. Put on 20mg from a couple of weeks ago. I understand statins accumulate in the blood, so assume they have now reached their level as same result as before. Sugars up double usual levels and not dropped below 13 all day. anyone had this?

Mine rose, I informed the Dr.

Told her that I was stopping them due to the BS levels and side effects.

My body, my decision.

Having taken pro-active steps in regards diet, weigh tloss and diabetes control she had to listen to my reasoning and although not ageing with it has had to go along with me.

I await my next bloodwork. :)

I was put on statins about 7 years ago - my cholesterol was normal but my doctor went on about having diabetes for as long as I my cholesterol should be low blah blah blah. I had trust in my doctor at that time so I started taking them and for the first time in a long time I lost control of my diabetes management. My insulin consumption doubled and my physical activity diminished as I was feeling aches and pains or was just too tired. So after a couple of months of that I stopped taking them and I regained my strength and health and diabetes management control about 3 months after that.
I don't know why you were put on statins but if your cholesterol levels were within range, I'd question the benefits - if they were high, you might want to take a hard look at your diet and see if there's anything you can do there. Often doctors will prescribe both a statin and a blood pressure medication to protect the kidneys from any potential stress of the statin.
It's pretty scary **** in my opinion,

Hi. It's a fact that statins do increase blood sugar when you are diabetic which is why automatically prescribing them to diabetics is pretty stupid. I do take statins and have recently doubled them as I have cardio problems and my cardiologist and I discussed the pros and cons (I've had to increase my insulin shots due to the blood sugar rise). I will not, however, allow my cholesterol to go too low - just improve the LDL/HDL ratios. They are sadly treated like sweets by many GPs and should be treated as a serious drug that needs careful handling.

Can I ask why your doc put you on statins in the first place?
Was it 'because all diabetics need statins'? (because that is nonsense)
or was it because you have a history of heart disease, and it is a sensible precaution looking at your QRISK score? (which is possibly valid but not an automatic assumption)
or was it because you have high cholesterol? And if so, how high, and what is the breakdown of the different parts, HDL, LDL, Trigs - because you can have high cholesterol and it be extremely healthy, if the ratios of the different parts are good.

Hi . I already take questran to reduce cholestrol as have gallbladder removed. Your persistance was longer than mine! I don't want to get the tired all the time stage. I think I will go with your move and stop taking them as levels are not exceptionally high considering after festive period. Will naturally lower now we have cleared the goodies. Thanks Sue

Hi. levels similar to the last two years read, which apparently didnt reach treatment levels. This year a different doctor saw me. You need statins, everyone with diabetes should be on statins he says. Heart is not my problem. acceptable blood pressure and despite having a horrible 64 over 35 episode following surgery last year (came to with a doctor bashing my chest) I worry more about the diabetes high.
cholestrol on a post festive high of 5.3 3.3tri and 1.17 hdl, not sure how bad this is, but worry is if statins are increasing from 5-10 up to 19 or 13-14 all day, surely definate diabetes sugar meltdown is worse than possible heart in years to come?

When I was put onto statins 'because all diabetics should take them' my hba1c rose from 48 to 54. I came off them due to other side effects and my hba1c has been between 36 and 38 for the last 3 years. I still have the dreaded statins conversation with my DN but politely refuse her offer!

I have just been told I have mild heart disease even thou I have excellent cholesterol.
I believe I've had diabetes 40+ yrs.
No statins.
Tried them once and gave me terrible heartburn so tried another then told they aren't safe for a fetus.
Eh, well not safe for me!!! That's was 6yrs ago.
My new gp knows I don't need them so after pregnancy I didn't return on them.
Ps. Brother-in-law high choloesterol had stents put in and now back to work. He has hereditary high cholesterol. He's a high risk!

thank you Daphne. Dancing in the rain it is then !!

Heartburn went on stopping that particular statin.
The pain I'm experiencing now steems from taking a diabetic drug called canagliflozin. It was excellent for bgs but has ruined my mobility. Started with sciatica then pelvic joint pain then lower back, now ribcage and sternum is affected too.
Still no statins so cannot blame simvastatin for my joint pains.
I'm now taking a betablocker which is giving me asthmatic symptoms.
Basically - all meds have side affects. Some never go away when you stop taking drug!

@ickihun you're not on Bisoperol are you? My husband takes them and they have given him asthma so is now on inhalers!

I've been reading up on this drug as they want to put me on it - there are several FDA notices about it in the USA - one relates to issues with lumbar spine and SI joints. I'll see if I can find the link I was reading earlier this evening

Yes. Bisoprolol @Daphne917 . Hoping to see a cardiologist soon to discuss meds.
Its a joke. One problem for another.
I would have been better off just on insulin not canagliflozin side affect too.

I was put on statins by my GP about 6 years ago, nothing wrong with cholesterol just a "good idea for diabetics to take them", I didn't have any BG problems but I had unbearable thumping cramps in my neck and shoulders, couldn't even sleep at night after 2 weeks. Change to bezafibrate and haven't looked back. Results not as dramatic as statins for cholesterol but we'll under normal levels. I'll never head back to statins again though.

Hi,

I switched surgeries last year. Went for checkup. DSN mentioned statins.. Age blah blah. T1 blah blah.. She was realy enthusiastic. Looked a little hurt when I knocked her back...
So, two weeks later I see a GP for results & so the surgery gets to know the new patient.. As it happens, the GP was a "stand in"?
A1c checked out along with cholesterol.. No problem. Then?!! She recommends "statin" long term diabetes (over 40 ears.) blah blah.. Politely knock it back. Then woooooooo! A stark warning. "Don't you want to reduce the chance of a heart attack or stroke in the next ten years?" Cheers doc! Gimme a decade to think about it...
