Statins and ace inhibitors

I have been prescribed Statins to lower my Cholesterol and more recently an ace inhibitor for early kidney problems.. I have started to feel very very unwell.. Cant get out of bed.. Sleeping badly.. Having to sleep hours in the day as im absolutely and completely out of it.. Cant think straight. My life has been blighted.. I tried cutting out statin after reading more about it .. And felt somewhat better but still poorly. I cut out the ace inhibitor and after a few days feel SO much better. Haven't felt this good for a long time. Anyone had similar experience with these drugs? Trouble is i know the doc will want me back on them.. Esp the ace inhibitor. Pharmacist says there are different ones to try but im wary. I felt so bad i dont want to go there again!

I was put on an ACE inhibitor for my heart failure - started on perindopril but when they came to increase the dose I was terrible with it - vomitingm dizzy, couldn't walk straight. So they changed it to a tiny dose of Ramipril (1.25mg) which I've been on for about three years and have never managed to increase because those symptoms return. However, I know lots of other people on big doses of ramipril who have no problem with it at all.


Type 2 on Metformin, diagnosed Jan 2013, ultra low carber, Hba1C at diagnosis 8% (64), average BS now between 5 and 6 mmol.

I've been on 10 mg of Ramipril for over ten years, never had a problem with it. I've tended to blame my statins for several things over the past year but each problem has been solved whilst still taking it, basically by losing weight, eating better and taking more exercise. So I a less inclined to blame them now.

But I do blame half a day digging out weeds and planting roses in the garden for making me thoroughly knackered and giving me all sorts of aches and pains. There's always something. All one can do is keep trying.

I can endorse the side effects of Captopril. I had many strange minor events same as the poster's but the worse was loss of balance upon rising from a chair and THE REDUCTION OF MY BLOOD PRESSURE close to 140 and below when - ALL MY LIFE - I had been 120/180. Now this I was not prepared to accept - the only GOOD thing about my Chronic Kidney Disease (Stage 3) is my excellent blood pressure and nothing will persuade me to swap that for some unproven condition using ACE Inhibitors.

Clearly we kidney sufferers have a fine line to walk regarding medication - I have to take Lasix (Furosemide) for a number of days at a time (2 x 40mg) to contra oedema preventing me from walking. If I use it for too long my kidneys cannot cope and excrete it efficiently and my Creatinine levels increase as a result and bring me closer to Stages 4/5.

Pinkbird - you must accept that you have a kidney condition and have regular monthly blood tests for the condition until a Creatinine level is established and stabilised. I will not go back onto Captopril but WILL listen to other knowledgeable specialists who can help or suggest how we should go about controlling Creatinine levels. If you do not have any swelling of the limbs or shortness of breath you may be offered an alternative to my regimen. In any event, I would be grateful for anything you learn about your condition and for the offerings from other sufferers of this aspect of Diabetes.
