Statins more than double the risk of type 2 diabetes, US scientists reveal

Nothing at all high from what you have posted. Your doctor seems to be going off the total, which according to the powers that be should be under 4 for diabetics. But we all know the total is meaningless without knowing the full breakdown. HDL, LDL, Triglycerides.

Depends completely on what ratio that is..
Did you get full lipid panel with Total , HDL, LDL and triglycerides?
If so you want to look at the triglyceride/HDL ratio that is supposed to be the important one.
Total of 5.2 is fine by the way in as much as the total "means" anything..
I have four results:
Serum HDL (44p5) 1.47 mmol
Serum cholesterol level (XE2eD) 5.2
Serum cholesterol/HDL (XaEUq) 3.5
Serum high density lipoprotein cholesterol level (XabE1) 3.7

And that's it.

Unfortunately thats not enough to really see what's going on.

My HBA1c is 41 which rather begs the question whether the guidelines for diabetics should still be applied.

What else do I need please and I'll ask my doctor.
You need a full lipid panel which will give you total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and Triglycerides.
You should have fasted for 12-14 hours before the blood is taken (whatever your doctor of nurse may say) otherwise the results will be less meaningful.

Many thanks. I'll ask my doctor next week. I don't think it's unreasonable for me to want to base my decision on statins on morre complete results.
