Statins or not

I just had my eye test this week and it showed retinopathy in the left eye although my cholesterol levels have never been high! I was never on statins and my bg control has never been better.:(
Hi. How long have you been managing your diabetes, if you don't mind me asking?

Hi @jonnoras! Since April last year my a1c is around 6.5 which my consultant finds amazing. I had retinopathy a few years ago but the last three years it was gone although my a1c was always between 8-9 back then.

That’s really interesting. It supports the view about glucose memory and historical levels still affecting eye change some years later. Thanks for sharing that. Cheers. Jon.

@jonnoras

As far as statins are concerned I'd rather not but doctor has been nagging me and even had phone calls from the surgery so am humoring him for now just for his peace of mind.

For some time I was not taking them in that period the retinopathy that was already present when diagnosed went away once blood sugars had been reduced.

I've always had highish lipids for the past forty years without any devastating effect.

So it's up to you if you take them but take them for reasons that make sense to you and are backed up by some sort of evidence.

Thanks for that. I think I’ve seen enough evidence to suggest high LDL is not the problem so I won’t be taking statins. Cheers. Jon.
