Steroid Induced Diabetes?

Unbeknownst to us our daughter had type 1 diabetes. She got sick with a virus. The doctor prescribed her steroids after testing negative to several tests. The steroids sent her into a full DKA. Steroids are not good for diabetics.

I would argue that steroids push up insulin resistance so you need more insulin whether T1 or T2 or prediabetic. If you are an undiagnosed T1 you would go into DKA eventually anyway, because eventually your diminishing insulin production goes too low. So though the DKA might be induced by the steroids the diabetes isn't.

Certainly I wouldn't be surprised to need a lot more insulin if I took steroids.

But I would expect steroid induced diabetes to be T2 (at least more like T2 than T1), and for it to not necessarily be permanent.

Thank you both. My husband is the diabetic in the house but I have Addisons Disease and am on life-long steroids. The gp has mentioned my Hba1c going up and mentioned the steroids. I'm wondering if low carb would help stop this or if it's inevitable.

Well if he's diabetic and you are in danger of becoming diabetic low carb would seem an obvious choice to me to see if you can improve things for both of you. Plenty of the T2s here keep their levels in non diabetic ranges by low carbing. I have no idea whether that will be enough to counteract the steroids but if if I were in your position I would give it a try.

Good luck.

If I stop taking the steroids I'd be dead in a week, so there's not a lot of options ::)

Not steroids induced diabetes but as Type 2 Diabetes I do take steroids for asthma flare up or chest infection as well when covid +.

My glucose levels will go very high above 20+ mmols on steroids and I have to keep an eyes out on Ketones levels for each 2 hours and drink water to flush out ketones esp nearly starting early DKA - 0.6 for my ketones.
