Hi Anon, it is very difficult to deal with diabetes when on long term prednislone as it is well known to raise bg levels and can even be a cause of T2 diabetes as it was in my case.
I would suggest that you ask your doctor for an appointment to see an endocrinologist/ specialist diabetic clinic, all hospitals will have someone who specialises in this area and many will have a dedicated diabetes unit headed an endo...
I was diagnosed with T2 after taking pred for around 2 years after suffering respiratory failure and was put straight on multiple daily injections of insulin, it was tough at first as I was petrified of needles!! But after injecting myself for the very first time and realising that I could do it and it didnt actually hurt I was fine and I found that by adjusting my insulin to my diet I got very good control quite quickly, within a month or so in fact. I also cut back on the amount of carbs I was eating with each meal too and found that helped me stabilise my bg levels too.
Over the next 12 months I lost over 4 stone in weight by dieting strictly and managed to wean myself off both the pred and then in time the insulin as the weight I lost helped me lose a lot of the insulin resistance that I had developed. I have been well controlled for 6 years now but I have not needed to go back on pred in that time, if I did I would seriously consider asking to be put back on insulin treatment as it is such a good way IMHO to gain good control.
So try to get an appointment with a specialist diabetic unit, you are entitled to see one, and good luck
