Steroid injection in knee Monday afternoon - still suffering

Hi,
I'm Type 2 diabetic controlled by diet for the last 8 years. I am unable to tolerate any oral diabetic meds. Last HbA1c in October was 6.4. I have been controlling levels by reducing carbs. I have little support from specialists except was told I would need insulin if HbA1c crept up again (went to 7.9).

I have had many steroid shots in my back with very little side effects. I had a steroid injection in my knee Monday afternoon and have been sufferrring since with high blood sugars, sweating(no temperature), nausea, extreme tiredness, headache and woozy head. Monday evening contacted NHS Direct as blood sugar had been at 19 for several hours, unheard of for me! They contacted emergency doctor who told me to keep monitoring and come back if it got worse. Drink plenty of water and be careful what I ate.

I had a GP appointment Tuesday afternoon and was still bad. Got some ketone strips and told to test. She wasn't very concerned and thought it would go down.

I'm still having problems with the nausea, headache, tiredness and woozy head. Every time i try and eat anything my blood sugar spikes and I feel a lot worse. I am eating very little. It isn't as high now as earlier in the week. Fasting values are still high. I haven't been at work all week.

Any suggestions please on how long this will last and how to get levels back down? Diabetic nurses at hospital were no use at all and told me Type 2 diabetics do not get ketones so do not test. Get in touch with GP again and be referred back. That could take weeks even months!

Re: Steroid injection in knee Monday afternoon - still suffe

I've had a few steroid injections myself over the last 12-18 months and usually my bg returns to normal the following day. As you say you have had steroid shots before without any problems, could it be that you are ailing from something unrelated to the injection? a high temperature, sweating and headache sounds very much liker it could be a cold or flu or even stomach related as you say you feel nausea, either way I hope feel better soon and your bg returns to normal.

Hi
I'm a type1 diabetic and like yourself i have had plenty of steriod injections in my back and hands and due to have my facet joints (which are in the back) next week, i haven't really noticed my levels change that much, but then we are all different. If you don't feel any better i would go back to the GP or contact your diabetic nurse if you have one.
Hope you get well soon
Tracey
