I am type 2 on saxaglyptin , blood glucose is totally unstable swinging between 3 and 16 but it has been a bit better in the last. 2 weeks ( 7 - 11) and have been given a short course of steroids. Within 12 hours my blood sugar has gone up to 13 and is staying there. I feel absolutely lousy. Any advice?

Yes, steroids are quite a problem with diabetes. Try to keep the course as short as you can and do discuss this with the nurse. If the time on steroids is likely to be longer, then some people are put on insulin for a while. Do keep measuring your sugars to check they don't go into the 20s. Below 20 you should be OK and the diabetes shouldn't be making you feel lousy but if you go into the 20s/30s it can be dangerous due to Ketones. Do keep the carbs down to help.

I found when I had a course of steroids in Jan they hit me for six. My parents were so concerned they wanted to come up from south wales, sick as a dog didnt cover it!
