my doctor insists i am diabetic and in denial because i keep asking him for clarification on issues such as pre diabetes and 'normal' hba1c levels.
he has been my GP for many years, and i dont want to change doctors. but i am feeling more and like a second opinion might help me somewhat.
my situation is this - i was diagnosed about a month ago via the oral glucose tolerance test. my fasting BG was 6.2, and the two hour test yielded a figure of 11.
i have read far and wide, but the numbers vary from site to site, source to source. so what do you think?
my understanding that a diagnoses of diabetes starts at 11.1 two hours after the glucose drink is imbibed.
am i splitting hairs here because i was 0.1 under that diagnoses, or do you think that this is still a significant difference which suggests a diagnoses of prediabetes would be closer to the truth?
with prediabetes, my understanding is that yes, many still go on to develop diabetes within a few years, or whatever it is. but there is still a small percentage of people who can turn it around, stop progression to diabetes, and even restore normal pancreatic function.
i am sure most people will agree with me in saying that a little hope can go a long way to maintaining a positive attitude and minimising health complications, right?
another thing is that i had my first ever hba1c test result come back yesterday - it was 5.8 - this is not bad is it? again my understanding is that it is within safe limits.
i called the diabetes uk helpline, and they said it sounded like i was borderline, but suggested a second opinion might help put the issue to bed. perhaps i should see another doctor in the same practice, they suggested, or even chang practices. i dont want to do that. like i said, i like my doctor, he has known me all my life, and deals with other members of my family too.
i have been told i cannot just walk into a hospital and ask for another oral glucose tolerance test. one has to be referred by a GP. fair enough.
but i dont have bupa cover or any other private healthcare plan that would afford me the opportunity to get another test done without my GP's knowledge.
i dont know. perhaps i am in denial.
but depending on what u read, it is fair to surmise that i might well be prediabetic, isnt it?
any thoughts on the matter would be highly appreciated.
