Still confused...

Okay, my dilemma: I'm going shopping on Friday. My larder currently consists of low calorie, low fat stuff (and carbs - hundreds of them). My virgin post yesterday was a cry for help to lose weight and the LCHF way of eating came up. So, since then I have been glued to every single page of the Internet (it seems), researching diet plans/recipes etc. I need to decide whether to give it a try as I'm desperate to lose weight. My current regime is very low fat (and thus very low calorie). Even though I don't eat any bread, my carb intake looks as though it's around 150-200g a day. So, I'm going to try and reduce it to below 100g. I have Atkinsed in the past, but I doubt my diabetic heath care team would be too happy about that. I figure that weight loss has to override anything else.

So, what do I put in my shopping trolley? Can I do a low fat, low carb, or would high fat be okay? And what fats are okay - I need to make sure I am lowering triglycerides? I'm currently taking oral meds, plus insulin twice a day (fixed amounts), so I'm not sure whether I should go low carb because of the insulin dosage I'm currently on.

Any help gratefully received!

I'm Type 2 not on insulin, so I don't feel I can help you much - but I'm bumping this up in case a low-carbing Type 1 comes along

Because that's what suits me and if your levels are as high as that in a morning, so should you...
 
Ok thanks so should i put 21 too at night at he moment i am doing 17 at night what do u guys suggest ???

Triglycerides should fall if you lower your carbohydrate intake - it's a myth that they come solely from fat - they are produced by the body from excess carbohydrate (ie if you eat more than you burn off). I would make cutting down on carbs a priority, especially if you are eating 200g a day. Try halving that and the weight and trigs should come down on their own. However if you want to eat a high fat diet then I think the science is that you have to be much lower carb than that, ie under 30g per day. If you are that low (as in Atkins) then you don't have to worry about fat because fat will just be burned off as fuel, in the absence of carbs. If you are going to eat a moderate carb diet then it will be very helpful to your blood sugars and triglycerides but doesn't give you carte blanche to eat unlimited fats as a ketogenic diet would.

You could perhaps have a look at Dr Richard Bernstein's book "Diabetes" - he's been a Type 1 since childhood (now in his 70s at least!) and has managed to turn many of his complication round by going low-carb. He has good information on managing the transition.

I think he has a web-site too - just Google his name.

I suggest you see your diabetes professional - you can't mess around with your doses yourself. They should tell you what doses you should have and more importantly why you should have them. If you are newly diagnosed, question why you are on insulin and not oral meds or not on oral meds and insulin.

You've answered your own question - don't eat last thing at night! You should aim to have your latest meal no later than 7pm and you should try to have your doses 12 hours apart.

Viv, I've already found him He popped up in my extensive trawling.

I had great results when I did the Atkins diet and I won't miss carbs - I'm just a bit worried about the insulin. I think I'm going to carry on with a very low fat/calories until I see my hepatic man (who is a big No Carbs believer). At least I'll be able to ask the right questions now I will also have to see my endocrinologist to change my insulin, I think. I'm really happy with what I have now, but I might be better with something else if I ditch the carbs.

Try to impress upon diabetic consultant that you really want to manage your life with D with minimal visitsand questions to hospital etc and can they give you some guidance how to adjust your doses of insulin yourself... So that you can manage yourself etc...

You are learning so much, so quickly about low carb, high carb, low fat etc... The most important thing is to learn how to also manage your insulin... As well for times of illness, stress, exercise etc....

Take on board advice from here which is fantastic.. But also bear in mind you need to be able to change foods BALANCING them with your insulin...
 

I'm not doing too bad on the diabetes side - down to six-monthly visits, but I think they tend to stick people on the insulin I use for ease of use. Where I live they probably aren't used to people expressing an opinion (or asking questions).

I'm learning all the time (even though I was diagnosed in 2007), but only an insulin user for a year or so, so I still have much to learn.

Is it important 12 hours apart i am messed up
I sleep at 5 am
Wake up at 2 pm take insulin at 2:15 pm(21 units )
At night i take at 10 pm (17units)

Help guys

Because you are injecting insulin every 12hrs, you need to 'feed your insulin some carbohydrate every 2-3hrs' so that your bg levels stay within an ok level when you test, which should be done every 2-3hrs. Sometimes, you will need to eat more carb at a meal time and less carb at another - The amounts of carb that you will need to eat at each meal time can be determined by what your bg levels are when you test.....

You do not want to be too high in bg when you go to bed so you will need to reduce the amount of carb that you eat for evening meal and eat it about 6-7pm........ not later.

Do you work nights? Or do you have sleep problems?
It is very hard to know how to be able to advise from your last posting.. As going to sleep at 5am and waking at 2pm is going to make things a little more difficult for people to work out help for you. Especially as your signature signs off that you have issues around sleeping and late night eating.
To help really we would need a full 24 hour diary of what your blood level tests are and what you are eating.

Nobody can really suggest ideas to help with so little clues...
 
Diets are not complicated. Its just will power. Complex cards only and small portions, chic peas, butter beans etc. Porridge is aa nasty one and not a carb I take. LOADS of veg, fresh veg not ones that release tons of sugar when cooked. Tons of greens, broccoli, SPINACH, celery, courgette, as much raw as possible. Fish, salmon all variety s of fish pref. fresh is best. Prawns, nuts, SEEDS are a brilliant snack. Err... Bit cheese, occasional eggs, water, almond milk un sweetened. WATCH thee low fat products they are often loaded with salt and other nasties. EXERCISE - burn more calories than you eat and you will hopefully loose weight. Good luck. I am doing the raw vegan and its working with no meds at all BUT its not easy and needs to be done with medical advise.
