Been on a lchf diet for last 6 weeks and lost a fair amount of weight. Today had evening meal and tested 4.5 before eating and way up to 9.1 2 hrs after! Had minced turkey, with broccoli, one onion, red pepper and savoy cabbage. Can't figure out what would cause such a big spike. These are foods that I've eaten before in other recipes with no problem. Does anyone else get results like this when they eat a certain low carb meal?

Did you add anything to the minced turkey? Flour or something to thicken? I can’t tolerate onion which is quite carb (for me). Could be something like that.

Perhaps you are brewing a bug? There have been reports of rogue batches of strips, was it a new tub?

Are you sure your finger was clean?

No flour, just stock cube and some turmeric... I do sometimes have a red onion but it doesn't really do much. Wondering if it might have been the red pepper??

I'm feeling ok. This was the 6th strip from the tub. If the same happens tomorrow I'll open another one and see what happens. I'm using the codefree meter.

There's about 14g carb in a medium onion, about 6gm in a small red pepper, so with the broccoli and cabbage maybe 25 - 28g carb depending on the size of your onion and pepper and the portion size of other veggies.

I have found to my detriment in the past although veg can be low carb the carbs can rack up without portion control.

Try using leeks in place of onion in recipes, lower in carbs and for me I find they retain their flavour more, especially in mince dishes

It may also be worth remembering that the longer you cook veg like onion, pepper etc the more sugar they release

Don't worry you are learning you're doing well, maybe next time you make it maybe use half an onion and less red pepper and see if you can tolerate better :)

Was the starting level of 4.5 a normal level for you before eating? Could that have been the rogue one?
It was a little lower than normal. Normally starts around 5, 5.5 or 6. Had a cheese omelette for lunch. No snacks just dinner.

Thank you! Yes I will give leeks a go. I don't normally count the carbs, just stick to above ground veg. Didn't think about the sugar re longer cooking - I roasted the red pepper so would def have been more caramelised and sugary.

Are you sure?
Yes they caramelise- they don't get higher in carbs or sugar but release sugars making them hit your blood stream quicker - it's why eating raw onion, pepper, tomato or whatever may be tolerated better than well cooked - they will also taste sweeter :)

That sounds more logical, thanks. Still the same amount of carbs though :)
