Hi Everyone. Wonder if you could help yet again. My husband, diagnosed a month ago, was put on Metformin which gave him dreadful nausea. He was then changed to Stagid, which is a french tablet, still Metformin but a slightly different compound. After taking this he has now developed terrible diarrhoea. As soon as he eats even a mouthful of food, he is getting griping pains and has to run to the loo. This is now just clear mucous.is this normal? Will it clear? Not sure if we should go back to the doctor yet again. I should mention that my husband is also being treated for prostate cancer and has been on hormone treatment for nearly 3 years, and I really hate to see him suffer in this way.

Hello and welcome to the forum grasscutters. So sorry to hear of your hubby's medical problems. Hopefully another type 2 might be able to help.
Has he been back to GP about the ongoing bowel problems, or is he receiving medical treatment that could cause a reaction with different meds.

Good luck and wishing your hubby all the best.

Hi everyone, and thank you for your kind reply! However am slightly worried that no one else has answered. Does this mean that the problems my poor husband has are unusual? We could really do with some reassurance. His diarrhoea has gotten so bad that he has to lie down after visiting the loo as he feels so weak. He also has a terribly bitter taste n his mouth. Has anyone else had these problems?

ask Dr..
slow release metformin is normally the better one, although some people can't tolerate either.
metallic taste is normal at start..
most start with just one 500 tablet ..symptoms should settle in a week
a low carb diet will also help and I took a a few different probiotics to get the gut bugs in balance
it’s a long page and a few good video’s

For me, the more carbs we eat the more carbs we want. they don’t give up easy

Bless you Jack! Thanks so much. He has been on Metformin for 3 weeks and the diarrhoea has only come on this last week. Dr also prescribed Lansoprazole for the nausea, but we has stopped this as we wondered whether this was causing the tummy upset. We are giving it until the end of the week and if no better we will have to go back to Drs. We tried Immodium but this did nothing. Thanks for your support.

ask dr..
I'm on 4x 500 tabs....if he is increasing his dose, he may need to drop one table back till it settles
just check he's on the slow release, it should say on the leaflet

Hi. Stagid appears to be variant of Metformin but may not have the benefits of Metformin SR (Slow Release) version. Do ask for Metformin SR if it is available in France; there are several different drug companies that make it. Many people have bowel problems with ordinary Metformin which often settles after a few weeks. Met SR is much kinder and few appear to have problems with it. A few cannot tolerate Metformin at all. It is possible the other drugs he is on are also part of the problem. Metformin only ever has a small effect on blood sugar and a low-carb diet will have the most effect. If your husband is on any steroid drugs then these can cause a large increase in blood sugar as well. It can't be easy so may be diet has to be the main focus at present?

Hello and welcome,

Yes, he must ask for a change of tablet. Meanwhile, he must drink gallons of water to stop dehydration, this is important.
