So glad I found this site - did a fasting blood test which resulted in a 12.8 reading. Have been losing weight (which I put down to senokot tablets) and feeling a wee bit thirsty but not over the top, but here I am, terrified it might/will be diabetes. Been on Norethisterone for a week now and finished that course, I also read that this medication could raise blood glucose? Am currently still on Omeprazole for indigestion after having to stop Lansoprazole as couldn't tolerate it. Would really appreciate any help/tips before going back to my Gp next week for a fasting GTT. Thanks.

hi, im afraid im not clued up about your other meds but i was told on the night of my diagnosis that if you go above 11 you are diabetic full stop :( this may be wrong but thats what i was told, maybe the meds your taking could put your bloods up, i dont want to worry you though, and if indeed you are diagnosed the best thing to do is not panic, its not as bad as you may think, with lifestyle changes it can even be a blessing and can be controlled, keep reading the forum, hopefully someone will come along with some knowledge of these other meds your on, theres thread here about questions to ask at the docs, it may be worth a read, ask any questions you have

thanks so much for taking the time to reply Andy (I got a trophy and that made me smile!). I've a feeling I definately have diabetes but am determined to be as healthy as I can be. Thanks for being helpful and honest.:shy:

Don't fret Zazoo. It'll be okay. You'll find what works for you, to keep your BG down. Let's hope it's just the meds causing the highs but if not, embrace it, work with it, rather than against it and like Andy said above, it could end up being a blessing and it can be controlled. Always room for optimism...

;)

It is academic but OP says a fasting test resulted in a figure of 12.8. You only have to be more than 7 in a fasting test. A speculative test of greater than 11 should result in further investigation. OP qualifies on either count. Sorry to be glum.

I didn't know norethisterone could increase blood glucose... interesting. I was on a course of this drug right before I was diagnosed.

thanks all, had a fasting glucose tolerance test and that came back high too. My GP wanted to put me on meds there and then, but I asked him to wait a month and I would watch my diet and exercise, then retest, to give a more accurate reading without the meds in my system (norethisterone i mean). Have been good with the diet, cutting out carbs and sugar, have lost a wee bitty weight but feel much more in control than I did when the doc mentioned the D word!! I just feel that I could have been walking around with diabetes for years, undiagnosed, so it's so much better for me that I know and can start improving my blood sugar, and lead a long, healthy life. I also had a dietician's appointment which was total pants in my opinion. Was told to keep on eating everything, just brown instead of white, powdered sugar, still have dessert - the woman's crazy I think! Just smiled, said thank you and went home and had some nuts!!!

Luceeloo, how interesting, isn't it strange, did your doctor retest you in a month or did he put you straight onto meds? My GP had no idea that this drug could raise blood glucose levels. Sounds like you are doing great, your figures look great.

Good for you. It will take more than a month though if they do a hba1c. that is a sort of 3 month average.

You can get fasting BG down. I got mine down in about 4 weeks. They were still high but over the months they came down and down.

Stay off meds if you can.

I know of doctors laughing when they transfused a man with dementure with the wrong blood. Luckily they didn't kill him but they dismissed it as his fault because he was in the wrong bed.

They failed to follow protocol and check the name on the patient's wristband. They took the name at the end of the bed. They thought it ever so funny. You're right to be wary of some of these people. They can be very casual with their attitudes.

Stick to small portions of low GI foods and those with complex carbohydrates and do one good walk per day if you are not normally very active and it will make a difference.

that's terrible - certainly our lives are in our own hands when it comes to health. Thanks for your encouragement - I still feel hungry a lot of the time - did you? eating lots of salad and eggs, chicken etc - any tips?

Yorksman, I went back to have a fasting blood done and test results were very good - down from 12.8 to 6.2! If I hadn't found this forum I would never have heard about low carbing and would have followed the dietician's advice to keep on eating carbs! I am now just classed as borderline and have to have another test in 6 months time I am so relieved! This site rocks!

That is excellent news and keep up the good work. Add some exercise (I find about 30 to 75 mins after eating works for me) and those numbers will come tumbling down. Doesn't have to be much but it just beats those sugar spikes out of your system. When I'm in a hurry I walk up and down the stairs 20 times (260 steps). I can do this in 5 mins (used to take 10) and that is all it takes to reduce my levels substantially, or of course go for a nice walk and see the countryside but be careful not to drown at the moment - swimming pools are better for that

Wouldn't it be funny if, in the future, it was proved that Diabetes was caused as a direct result of other medications... think of the Claims .. lol
