Hi!

I'm 16 year old very slim male, i have been curious of my blood sugars and purchased a blood sugar moninter!
My blood sugars do strange things, after my breakfast my blood will be fine then after about 30/45 mins they will drop, i have seen them go as low as 4.1 mmol/l but i dont know if they are going lover and i haven't seen it, my breakfast has quite allot of sugar in it because i need to gain weight, i have around 35g of sugar at breakfast (porridge, 2 eggs scrambles, and a banana, and a 50g bowl of cheerios) It seems to be only after breakfast that my bloods drop! My fasting blood sugar is 4.9-5.2 mmol/l. I don't do a lot of exercise, Please can someone help me out it makes me worried!

Thanks,
Alex :)

I was curious about it, and i had been feeling unwell so i purchased a meter? Do you think i have traits of reactive hypoglycemia?

If you are worried go to the doctor. It is not only sugar diabetics avoid. Some carbohydrates have a greater effect on us than sugar.
Most of us would be well into double figures if we ate that breakfast. A low reading is usually only a problem for people taking diabetic medication.

Hi

If you are worried about your health I would recommend you see your GP. They would be able to give you an MOT and check your general health as well as looking for specific conditions.

Write down any symptoms or concerns you have before you go as its so easy to forget to mention something when you are there that might actually be the key to your GP giving you a diagnosis or ruling out certain conditions.

As you are young, the only thing I would say to you is, if you want to put on weight, is just eat more food, do not try to boost your weight by eating loads of sugar. No matter how normal you are, eating loads of sugar will eventually do long term damage. I rather suspect what you are experiencing is a reaction to producing lots of insulin to deal with the sugar, which is normal, we produce insulin to do just that, but once it has done its job, you will suddenly be short of glucose (thats what insulin converts carbs, sugars etc. too) this is because you consumed too much in the first place, and it will take a little while for the body to compensate. Readings in the 4s, or even in the 3s are perfectly normal. Your body will keep a fairly steady level throughout the day on proper real food. Some people are just destined to be slim, you are young and growing fast, you will naturally experience periods where you have grown in height and got skinny, then you will fill out again etc. etc. its normal. Just make sure that you eat proper nutritious food, and yes, you can eat puddings etc. but its not necessary to try to load yourself up with sugar.
