Strange OGTT results profile - insulin response question

Hi all,

I had an OGTT postnatally last October, having had insulin-dependent GD for the second time in pregnancy. Whilst all the readings were within the normal range, the highest reading was at 2 hours, not at 1 hour as I was expecting.

My question is this: could this mean that my second-phase insulin response is breaking down? And if so, what could this mean in the long term? Are there any other reasons (other than just plain randomness) to explain the higher 2-hour reading?

I know y'all mostly are not doctors, but I'd be interested to know if anybody else has any thoughts, or has had a results profile similar to this, and what happened to you subsequently.

Many thanks for all your help.

Jo

sounds more like first phase is problematic as you don't appear to be producing the initial insulin release and it is taking your second phase into hour 2 to get on top of the carbs.

1st phase, 2nd phase, Alpha, Beta............why worry if the readings were normal?

Congratulations

I was told by the Diabetes team at the hospital that as I was on insulin for the second time in pregnancy, it was now a case of when, not if, I would develop diabetes as a permanent condition.

I appreciate that the test results were normal (although the fasting test bloods done a year after the birth of my first child came in at 6.9mmol/l - eek!) but I was, as Fergus said, curious. I wondered whether there was any significance to the result, i.e. could it be used as some kind of soft indicator for future problems.

In case anybody was wondering (probably not), these were the results:

4.7 fasting, 5.7 at one hour, 6.4 at two hours

I was wondering. And those results are pretty good! I'm never under 6 pre meal or under 7 at 1 hr

BUT

I wonder what the 3 hour reading was? Would you continue to creep up? Things change. For instance my readings were more like yours a year ago. I think it's worth getting your own meter to see what things are like after 2 hours or if there is an upward trend over time. Pregnancy must have been doubly stressful dealing with GD... Twice!

Best of luck to you x

I don't know. They only ever do a two-hour test where I live!

I'm keeping an eye on my fasting readings by doing a test once a month (got a load of leftover lancets and test strips from pregnancy - yay!), and it's been recommended that I do an OGTT yearly, rather than just a fasting test. My GP, however, is not sure that it's strictly necessary. I think I can talk her round :)

Cheers

Jo
