I find I have to be a little careful with these lovely suggestions. A TV chef said that ground white pepper on mushrooms improves them. He is right but when you get addicted and use lots of pepper you can get cholic. So if anyone has a mystery stomach problem then use less pepper.
Do you have a source? Not even google came up with a hit on 'pepper and cholic' and neither on 'pepper and colic'. Are you sure you're talking about colic/cholic and not just hearburn from eating spicy foods when not used to it?

When I was on a drug that elevated my blood pressure a tad several years ago my GP told me to cut down on salt, of course she did. She works for the NHS. She advised me to use a white pepper instead. She didn't mention cholic. I pretty well ignored her anyway.

Right, I will change it to a personal statement. A TV chef, possibly James Martin, said that white ground pepper worked well with mushrooms. Eating lots of mushroom omelettes as I did, I introduced ground white pepper and they did taste better. Over a period of some days I began to suffer windy stomach pains. These increased in intensity until it was quite severe and I realised I had to find the cause. I stopped using the pepper and the improvement was fairly rapid.

If others don't suffer a reaction to pepper then I feel good for them.

I discovered the other day that mushrooms contain polyols, who knew? So eating a lot of them could be a cause. Just a thought.

There is something about the taste of white pepper (the sort found in cafes etc) that makes me gag. Now freshly ground black pepper - I have it once or twice a day on lunch and dinner.

Interesting- I use a plate of fried mushrooms sometimes to "help me along" - they always work but I never knew why :)

Here is something interesting I got from Wikipedia. I also looked up cholic and the Mayoclinic said it's when your baby cries. However, if you look up horse cholic you get a better article.

"Gas and spasmodic colic[edit]
Gas colic, also known as tympanic colic, is the result of gas buildup within the horse's digestive tract due to excessive fermentation within the intestines or a decreased ability to move gas through it.[6] It is usually the result of a change in diet, but can also occur due to low dietary roughage levels, parasites (22% of spasmodic colics are associated with tapeworms),[7] and anthelminthic administration.[6][8] This gas buildup causes distention and increases pressure in the intestines, causing pain.[6] Additionally, it usually causes an increase in peristaltic waves, which can lead to painful spasms of the intestine, producing subsequent spasmodic colic. The clinical signs of these forms of colic are generally mild, transient,[8] and respond well to spasmolytic medications, such as buscopan, and analgesics. Gas colics usually self-correct,[8] but there is the risk of subsequent torsion (volvulus) or displacement of the bowel due to gas distention, which causes this affected piece of bowel to rise upward in the abdomen.[6]

Abdominal distention may occasionally be seen in adult horses in the flank region, if the cecum or large colon is affected.[6] Foals, however, may show signs of gas within the small intestines with severe abdominal distention.[6]"

So I'm a horse.
