hi, I'm just interested to find out if anyone else finds there blood sugars fluctuate when dealing with stressful 'life changes' or situations. I'm not sleeping great due to different reasons and my blood sugars are up and down. I just wondered if this could be to blame thanks

Absolutely, Pretty much everything can affect your BG, but especially hormones and stress. Think of it in the sense of fight or flight ... when your body reacts to stress, the liver dumps energy into the bloodstream in preparation for use by your muscles. Also, overnight, the body release growth hormones which also induce the liver dump, and the raised BGs (dawn phenomenon), and so yes, stress can certainly be to blame.

Stress has a major effect on my blood sugars...so yes...very likely this is the cause. Hope things get easier for you soon :)

Definitely. I had a very stressful period at work at the start of the year dealing with redundancies and loss of business and my levels rocketed to the high 20s. My GP put it down to stress and I was signed off work for 2 weeks and put on saxagliptin to supplement the metformin. Try and chill down....stress is not a good thing for a diabetic. Good luck.

Stress is a big factor but I often find that it's effecting me even though I don't feel stressed! It's a difficult one to manage but you're definitely not alone! x

It's so hard especially when you have to adapt so much in the first place just for other factors to mess everything up. Definitely a juggling game

Absolutely! My husband was rushed into hospital following a stroke. The next eight weeks were hell, hospital twice a day, enormous stress and anxiety. I tried to keep my level mealtimes and foods but could feel hypos on several days. In the end I had an emergency appointment with my DN, who took me off my Gliczyde and took me to eat a sandwich or banana between meals to stop lows occurring. I was living on nervous energy. Now back on my medicine, keeping a regular routine and hopefully stabilised. But I agree that stress certainly affects you.

My son goes through this every day, he will leave the house with a reading of 5 and by lunchtime he can be anything from 16-28
without fail. He finds school a very stressful enviroment. At the weekends we get nice steady figures.

Hello, as others have said, stress can really mess up your BG. Apparently it has something to do with the release of cortisol at times of stress. I know it`s easy to say don`t get stressed but, on a practical note, maybe you could try meditation? it is supposed to be just about the best thing for stress if you can get your head around it. Good luck, Chris.

On days I work my bg is never below 16. No matter what. On my days off its never above 10. I'm currently applying for other jobs but it's a struggle. Going to try out mindfulness. Don't really know what else to do. At least we know we aren't alone

I've suffered for the last two years with hypos approx down at 3.5. I've continually told the doctors this and they say you shouldn't hypo when on metformin. Recently tho my stress levels are very high as my partner has cancer. And I'm getting two or three hypos a week and my GP says it's purely down to anxiety. Yet my partner with t2 has seen no change in his levels and he's on metformin
I'm T2 and on metformin and gliclazide

It is a common misconception that you cannot hypo on Metformin, it won`t CAUSE a hypo but it won`t PREVENT one either and if you are getting a lot of them then I think your GP should take another look at your meds ((Gliclazide).

Oh yes! I've been told I'm not diabetic but hyperinsulin but my levels are at 8.5 two days in a row

Definitely - even minor/short term stress can affect my levels, though not necessarily seriously. I saw a good example recently when I was using my Freestyle Libre sensor, and had a set to with my husband: the result was a straight up spike in my glucose level.
