Ive been really stressed out lately and my blood sugars have been all over the place because of my ingrown toenails as i want a general anesetic i have to explain to the doctors how i have been feeling, has anyone ever been put to sleep for a short operation if their blood sugars have been a little high?

I have had a general...but would really perfer a local if they would let me! This is based on hating being in hospital and wanting to get out ASAP!

It was 10 years ago since I had a general, and it was not something that I had a choice about, so they concentrated more on what my BG was at the time. I was nil by mouth, and had to go on a sliding scale...but still managed to hypo before theatre. They will always try and get T1s to have a local over a general...and my main problem is teeth, and have teeth extracted, roots extracted, and major canal work, all under local...with the "if it was anyone else, they would have had a general comment. To be honest, it was absolutely fine...and far better than the 2 day stay in hospital would have been!

Having said that though...it is your call, and if you want a general, then they should allow you your choice. Be prepared for a short stay in hospital though, and possibly having to change your insulin doses etc.

best of luck with the toe...they are so painful!

Thanks for your reply, i only want a general because im so scared to have a local and i really dont want a injection in my toe. they said that it will be a day surgery so i wont have to stay in over night which is good, my blood sugars have been going mad with the stress i am getting i have been really worrying really bad

I've had my toe nails done because of in growing toe nails, I had them for as long as I could remember, its a really short procedure and yes the initial injection hurts but then its all over and done with really quickly. I personally couldn't be bothered with the hassle of being knocked out.

Good luck

I too had my toenails done under local. Much less hassle than a general, and despite being a T1 I am absolutely petrified of injections anywhere, but honestly it wasn't that bad.

I have had general anaesetics too, I've had the opposite experience as well as being high on another occasion of a general when low, they wanted me to have my pre med whilst my sugars were too low, but I was sorted out and had the op and no problems. They still did my hysterectomy despite my levels being high at the time.

My experience is that on a general ward, that the consultants and nurses don't really know too much about diabetes, and I still managed my own diabetes whilst in hospital for the 1 day before and 4 days after my hysterectomy. Because I was managing it myself the nurses were excellent with just ensuring that I had my foods when needed, as they knew they didn't have to worry about me as I was testing my own bloods etc.

There is actually no way that I would have a general unless it was absoultely necessary these days, depite me still having the chronic fear of injections and needles. It toook me 40 years of my life before I had an injection in my mouth, after my dentist when I was a kid put the fear of god in me. That fear will always be there, but I would rather be awake and knowing what was happening than anybody doing things that I wasn't aware of.

Hope all goes well, but Drs and people would not recommend a local if they thought you would need a general.....
