This Diabetes thing is a real struggle, I was diagnosed early in 2009 and thought it was all under control. Then this time last year I had to start taking Metformin (500mg 3x a day). Mostly ok but at my most recent clinic appointment the nurse told me the numbers were creeping up and it was possibly because I kept missing my lunchtime tablet, so she put me on Glucophage (500mg x3, all at the same time after my main evening meal). Does it take a while for the slow release things to build up cos I'm in the high teens according to my blood sugar meter...?

Would a tweak in eating plan help you a bit?
I went strict low carb to avoid increasing medication. It works for me and I'm so used to it, it's not a problem.
I'm not saying low carb is the only way, GI and portion size might do the trick. I'd always rather avoid increasing medicines. some leave you vulnerable to hypos and put you in the sphere of the new driving regs.

Hi. If you are keeping to a reasonable low carb/low GI diet and your bs readings remain in the teens 2 hours after a main meal you must see the doc to get further medication added. NICE guidelines suggest a three-level medication regime with the third level tablets or insulin. Quite often a a GP will add Gliclazide and or Sitagliptin or possibly one of the non-insulin injectables. I've been thru the Met, then Glic and more recently Sitagliptin route. A lot depends on whether you are overweight or not, as to which tablets will have the most effect. I would have expected the Metformin SR to have taken effect within a week or so if it was going to have any effect?
