Struggling after virus

Bit of advice to see if anyone has experienced this before. I have recently had a virus where my blood sugars were elevated and I struggled to get them into normal range regardless of insulin intake. The virus has gone, but my insulin intake has almost doubled from what I was injecting pre virus. I understand it may take a while to return to normal. What is worrying is when I inject before my meals almost instantly I’m getting the feeling of a hypo although my blood sugars are within normal range. I feel shakey and legs feel week and this lasts for about half an hour to an hour.

Hi @Dan_Mason

Just a thought, but how long have you been T1? Any chance your honeymoon period has now ended?

I personally find my insulin needs do change, and am not always sure why. Were you running high during the virus? I know new diabetics sometimes get false hypos because their levels have been running high and their bodies have become used to higher levels. so wonder if this could be an explanation. (Not something that has happened to me, despite many periods when my blood sugar has run high).

I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,

I’ve been a diabetic for 10years so I wouldn’t of thought it was the honeymoon period and I was only running high for 3-4 days and that was between 10-14 so not too high

Hi Dan,

Your not alone, I too have just recently gotten over a virus, and yes my blood sugars were elevated just like yours and had much trouble getting them below 12 mmol/L for the entire four days I was unwell with the virus. Like you too, I am now over the virus and back to normal health but my sugars are still elevated and as you described the smaller increment down to 8.7 mmol/L for example, now feel like having a hypo and at first I did not trust my Libra sensor and had to test my blood with the old finger pricking method just for my own peace of mind. So you're definitely not on your own, it is happening exactly the same way for me. I do understand that a virus contains sugar and that is why our sugars are elevated when we have a virus, the only problem I had is that I could not carb count the virus, so was unsure how much quick acting insulin I required to bring it under safely against the virus and food intake.

Today is my first real day that I'm feeling 100% with in myself and my sugar levels have steadied out to about 8.5 mmol/L.

Hopefully yours will also be doing the same in the next day or so too,

Thanks
