Hi,
Up until recently I had more issues with low sugar levels than high. Over the last couple of weeks no matter what I eat my sugars are very high. For example my levels on rising are 9.9 to 10.5, I had fish and vegetables for tea. Breakfast this morning 1 slice of whole meal toast from a small loaf and sugars up to 17.6.
I have no idea what I am doing wrong and feeling quite poorly with it.
I am on Gliclazide 160mg and Metformin 1000mg per day.
Any advice?

Thanks
Mags

Hi @Wkdmags

You obviously had a low carb meal in the evening but a little over a year ago you wrote:-
Hi, My BMI is 23.3. Unfortunately my diet consists of mainly carbs, would not know how to start counting.

Have you made any progress with this ? Is your whole diet low carb now?

Are you planning to go back to your doctor about your blood glucose levels?

Hi, I have managed to cut right down on carbs and lost weight in the process. Was trying to avoid going to Docs but may have to. Don't like my meds being messed about. The whole diabetes thing is getting me stressed.

It stresses us all out. How low carb are you? Many of us would see the exact same thing with whole meal toast. Once we pop up sometimes it stays up for a few days which is why many of us rarely have 'cheat to treat' meals. There is usually a price of a few days of wonky readings to follow.

Toast is very high carb - and would spike me.

I see you're on gliclazide - your lows are because gliclazide just keeps pumping out a steady-state of insulin, whether you need it or not. Too much insulin => lows.

Gliclazide can also temporarily or permanently damage the beta cells - which would result in a drop-off of insulin production, which would decrease the lows and leave your body less able to deal with carbs like the toast (and generally increase you BG - which would make me feel terrible).

You might want to check in with your doctor about your current meds (take your logbook so s/he can see the pattern.) It sounds as if you hate doctors/messing with meds - but unless you are able to completely control your diabetes by diet (e.g. very low carb), diabetes is generally thought to be progressive - which inherently means adjusting meds as the symptoms worsen.

I followed a virtual no carb diet and lost weight..was told to not lose any more and introduce complex carbs... I have done this and put on a bit of weight but clearly my body cannot handle carbs any more. Seriously for last two weeks cannot get my sugars below 9. Obviously I have to eat but just spiking all the time. Seriously naffed off .
