Struggling with eating

Hi it’s been a while since I’ve been on the forum, but I’ve been very unwell with my diabetes, depression, fatigue and poor diet. I came of Trulicity high dose as got lots of side effects so told to stop but my levels were up at29 and more. So went back on the low dose and my levels are now normal but I am craving sugar so much and no appetite for “normal food “ can’t get it under control help!! Thanks

It‘s good your BG is now normal. Sometimes, I want something sweet too. I try to keep things around that are better than others like strawberries, dark chocolate, pears, no sugar popsicles, etc. I am fortunate that I really like whole food, too and try to eat lean proteins and veggies at meals. Some people get a food coach or dietitian to help them with planning their diets. Do you think it’s the medication that affects your appetite?

Hello @Fifi26

I'm also a sweet tooth so I feel your pain. One thing that was not intuitive that helped me was to increase my salt intake. I'm keto and was deficient on salt. Apparently (and I don't understand why) this can lead to increase desire for sweet things/sugar.

Worthwhile trying. Of course I also find diet jelly (frozen to make it take longer to eat) also helpful.

Good luck and know that you are not alone!

I agree, hopefully you can find some sweet things that work for you. Mainly whole fruits for me, and sometimes dark chocolate.

Worth trying a few to see what you prefer and what works for your blood sugars. E.g. cheap bananas and oranges go down a treat in my house. But only Pink Lady or Jazz apples get eaten. Same for strawberries (British strawberries).

I figure it's worth the extra money - they are our treats. And the cheap apples would only go to food waste.

Thanks for your input everyone I will definitely try using fruits more and I know that it is probably stress eating so need to tackle that too

Be very careful with fruits. Most have a lot of sugar. Try and stick with berries and not go too overboard with them.

Fruit like banana, grapes, pineapple and many other tropical ones are both high carb (which will show on a meter) and high fructose (which doesn’t but can add to fat around the liver - bad for anyone but especially type 2 - as we can only process small amounts of fructose at a time without storing it thus.)

That said if you’re going to blow out better done with fruit than some junk as it least there’s some good stuff in there with the sugar.

I recently discovered strawberries dipped in very dark melted chocolate and rolled in chopped almonds or pecans. A few largish ones make a decadent dessert, unfortunately very moreish though.

This sounds difficult, and there is a mental health angle to it as well, so you may want to look into that, if you haven't already.

There are sweet low carb options, as mentioned, also low carb baking with sweetener, fat bombs, chocolate. I'd also be very careful with fruit. Soon after my diagnosis I ate a banana and it spiked my blood sugar too much. Also, it may just be necessary to temporarily cut out any sweetness. That's what I did for a while to get used to savoury food. Now I am hardly craving sweetness anymore.

I only occasionally get a craving for sweet things now since I stopped putting sweetener in my coffee and eating more protein and healthy fats and less veg (almost carnivore I suppose). My go to now if I get cravings are blueberries or raspberries (only about 10 of them) and a splosh of double cream or full fat yogurt. The cravings usually happen if I’m bored or stressed. Hence I’ve started playing a lot of games on my iPad :p  Ooo I’d forgotten about the sugar free jelly, it’s great if you put the berries in it before it sets!
