Re: Very high sugar levels

Lisa,

Go and speak to your diabetes care team and ask to be referred to a counsellor. If your diabetes is making you feel this way and you cannot get a handle on it, you need some qualified help to come to terms with the psychological side of things. No relationship will survive mood swings, aggression or violence, so you owe it to yourself and your husband to get the help you need. You have made a great start by posting here and there are many knowledgeable people here who will help you to take control of your diabetes, but you need to get some professional help in coming to terms with it. Print out what you have posted here and take it along to your diabetes team and show them. They will know how to help you. Let us know how you get on.

Lisa,

Glad to see I'm not the only one with high blood sugars although mood swings not that bad, have even gone down the road of over compensating with increasing my insulin intake and ending up with a couple of serious hypo's and weirdly horrendous leg cramps (can anyone explain that one). Smidge your advice is helpful but I personally find it hard to explain my failure to get to grips with my condition, as I feel not only a failure but wasting the healthcare staff's time. Should have mentioned I'm Male 53years type 2 and been taking insulin for 10 years but last 3 have just been crazy.

Hi. I'm 43 and have been type 1 for almost 10 years. Like you, I literally have never accepted it and have fought it every step of the way. I don't have the mood swings with hugh blood sugars, so I can't empathise with that particular problem, but I can really empathise with every other thing. I recently decided to do something about it and made an appointment to see my care team ... in the meantime I got hit with flu and wound up in intensive care with a severe DKA. It was hell, but actually I am now on a new insulin and have a new focus to really tackle this thing head on. I know I will still fight it on occasion but I needed this wake up call to really get me focused.

Go see your team. Be honest with them, like totally honest. That was the most difficult thing for me ... hey, I'm DKA because I don't like taking my humalog ! ... but it worked, it turns out I had an intolerance to humalog and they've switched me onto something I am more suited to.

Good luck x
