Struggling

Saw my DN this morning for the first time since lock down. My hba1c came back at 90. Has anyone got any suggestions to bring it down quickly. I've lost over 2 stone so was hoping for better result.

You lost weight, but your HbA1c didn't follow suit Do you have ANY idea why? Are there obvious culprits, like changes in diet, stress, medication, physical activity. Did you test at all during lockdown, were there any indicators you remained high? There are lots of reasons why blood sugars may have gone up, if you have any idea what was the main reason, that'd help.

If not, I'm just throwing some stuff out there, see what sticks.

Is your diet carb heavy, or did it become thus over lockdown? (You certainly wouldn't be the only one who ate for comfort...!). That's easy enough to fix: just start low carbing and get your blood sugars back down.

Did you start medication that ups blood sugars, like certain antidepressants, statins, steroids? Are alternatives available without the same side effect, or could you do with less or even without? If changing medication isn't an option, then a medical intervention might be required, meaning (more?) medication for your blood sugars. I'm not a big fan of more pills and such, but sometimes, we just don't get much of a choice. Needs must.

The one thing that does bother me a little is that you lost weight. Do you know why that happened? Because high blood sugars and weight loss could spell a different type than two... Happened with me and was a regular T2, but that's apparently rare. Any chance of your DN asking for C-peptide and GAD tests to rule out a different type of diabetes? It is something that needs to be checked, because different types require entirely different treatments.

Keep asking questions, and throw anything out there you think might be relevant.
Hugs,
Jo

Congratulations on your weight loss, it is sure to have helped some, but as you have discovered, for many of us it's not all about weight.
Carbs when digested release glucose which causes your blood sugar levels to rise.
As a T2, your pancreas usually makes more than enough insulin but you have become resistant to it.
Your insulin is no longer as effective as it once was, so your sugar levels remain high.
By cutting out as many carbs as you can, you are removing the source of the glucose, your sugar levels don't get so high after meals and your insulin has an easier job to bring your levs down.
Our inability to process carbohydrates is what for many of us caused our weight gain.

Luf. Stress can cause many problems, including blood sugars. Perhaps we need look no further than your avatar!:happy:

Seriously, JoKalsbeek's post above is a good one and typical of the sensible help you'll receive on here.
Well done on the weight loss.
Best of luck

Sorry to hear this @Luf that must feel very upsetting.

What is your diet like? Is there any room for improvement? But as @JoKalsbeek said things like stress and illness can also play a part. My approach is to start with the things you can control and diet is one of those things. Stress and illness are much harder obviously.

Are you using a meter to let you know what effect different foods have on your levels? If you haven't already got a meter I highly recommend that you get one. That will give you information at the time rather than waiting for the next HbA1C.

If you give us some info on your diet we may be able to suggest some improvements.
