Struggling....

Thanks guys! It's nice to have responses from people who know what it's like & understand first hand! I think the main thing is that I need to be less concerned with what I'm told I need or should need & trying to stick with it & not be so worried about adjusting to more if I need it, as its what I need.

Did any of you who went on DAFNE have any problems with taking the time off of work?

I was lucky and had quite an understanding employer. Under the disability act you are allowed to take time off for any appointments especialy related to diabetes so this shouldn't be a problem. I just told work I had to go on a training course to help with my diabetes. Mine was for 3 days in the mornings so I was back in work in the afternoon. Hope you manage to get it off ok :D

I definitely need to get on DAFNE!
I try to but it's not always the case, I think I may have to pick a time & set a reminder to get back into the routine.
Sometimes I feel like I need a refresher although I've been doing it for a long time! & looking back it has all changed a lot. How long have you guys been diabetic?

Although going on a DAFNE course is obviously of great benefit, in the meantime there is an excellent ebook from Diabetes UK ("An introduction to carbohydrate counting and insulin dose adjustment" https://shop.diabetes.org.uk/usr/downlo ... educed.pdf) which gives all the basics of carb counting and bolus insulin dosages to match these carbs. Just read and understand the contents of Chapters 3 & 4 and put that into practise, and I bet you will get improved BG control with less BG extremes and hypos .. that has been my experience.

Although I've been a T1 for 40+ years, it wasn't until I found this forum about 8 months ago and all the useful references, that I learned about basal/bolus regime (never even heard that term before!), and that the insulin-carb ratio was the real key to getting good control. And the fact that this ratio would be different for different times of the day i.e. each meal, was also totally new to me. Also my consultant had never told me how to check if the Lantus (basal) dose was correct by doing fasting tests, so that was also really useful information.

To manage your diabetes successfully, as I've done for four decades, with no complications, you MUST have a routine and ensure all data is properly recorded so you can review it on a regular basis to achieve improved BG control.

Best of luck ...

Jonty
