I was diagnosed in Nov 13 with Type after my blood level was 33. Since then i have been put on Slow release Metformin 2 x 1000 at night. I currently have tingling sensation in my legs and my weight has dropped by over 13Kg since then. I keep an eye on my food intake and test myself twice a day and the last few weeks it has varied from 6.8 to 20.4 on a couple of days. I have not done any exercise for a few weeks due to an injury but hope to start again soon. My question is will the weight loss stop soon or could it be something else and would i need to maybe go onto something like Gliclazide as i dont wish to go onto Insulin as i am unable and uncomfortable to jab myself. My HBa1C has come down from 10.1 in Dec to 7.1 back in early April. I know something is not right as i have never felt like this prior to my diagnosis. Some help and advice would stop me worrying all the time and give me some sort of guidance.

Hi. Can you let us know how old you are and whether you were overweight at diagnosis or nearer normal? It is always possible that you have Late onset T1 rather than T2 as the weight loss is one common factor. Yes, Gliclazide might be the next level of treatment so do discuss this with the GP. Don't worry if you do need to go onto insulin. Modern cartridge pens have very small needles e.g. 4mm long and very thin. They cause less pain than the finger-prick lancet! BTW the GP can do two tests that will help confirm or not a LADA (Late onset T1) diagnosis; these are GAD and c-peptide.
