Jess has had a temperature since Sunday night, her brother had the same thing on Thursday last week and was sent home from school. Last week I bought a new bottle of Calpol and in my rush and discussing something else with the pharmacist I stupidly forgot to pay attention to what I was buying, I ended up with the orange flavour instead of the usual strawberry. When Jess developed her temperature late Sunday night I gave her the Calpol no problem. Woke up Monday morning with a high reading of 16 mmol/L. Thought it must be the temperature playing hovoc with her readings so didn't think too much of it, did the usual correction etc. Only by late Monday afternoon did I realise that the Calpol was not a sugar free version. No wonder her readings had been bouncing all over the place through Monday. Can't believe I was so stupid to not check what I was giving her! We are back in control again

ahhh dont beat urself up weve all done it and thought afterwards how silly we were i did it with fruit shoot it wasnt the no added sugar version and i never checked once not made the mistake againt tho.
easily done hope she feels better soon

I don't think there is an option to buy medication with sugar here. All paracetamol, nurofen, antihistamines are all sugar free. Here I was thinking this would be the world over.

Jen I think they are not very thoughtful about sugar free stuff here. I had to have some liquid medication for oral thrush a while ago, I went to 3 chemists, Boots and independent one and Manor Pharmacy which is also a chain I think, with the prescription and none of them could find the sugar free version on their systems, they did not think it was made any more.
So 4 times a day I had to have this sugary stuff, it can't have been good for my teeth let alone my blood sugar levels.

And I would imagine people with diabetes are the main group of people who get oral thrush, so you'd expect a sugar free version.

It tasted really foul though, so possibly it would have been unbearable if it was sugar free.

Sophia,

Do not beat yourself up over it. I have been diabetic for over 20 years now and still manage to pick up non sugar-free drinks every now and then. It happens! :)

At least you are checking her levels regularly so picked it up quickly. No harm done.

Hope she is feeling better now!

Thanks :) Yes she is feeling better now, she was back at school yesterday and her readings are back to normal.
