I was diagnosed with Type 2 about 7 months ago. It came on suddenly, I started to drink a lot and I assumed it was just due to a sinus infection I had - thinking I was dehydrated. Within a week. I went from no symptoms to being out at a meal and drinking 14 pints of water in the space of about two hours, I just couldn't quench my thirst no matter what I did. My eyesight also rapidly deteriorated from pretty good (never needed glasses) to not being able to see more than 10 feet in front of me, with blurred faces and signs in the supermarket. My H1ac - if I have the acronym correct? Was 75 or 7.5 - depending on how you wish to express that.

I can't exercise due to serious health issues (used to be super fit - was for many years) but I immediately went on an Atkins style diet and cut my carbs down to around 20 a day. At my last checkup my H1ac was 48 or 4.8 - again however you wish to express that. I have not lost weight on the diet, guessing my calories are relatively similar to how they were previously. The point though relates to the numbers, plus I feel a lot, lot better. I have no issues in terms of eyesight, i'm sleeping much better and feel far healthier. It would be a great bonus to lose some weight and maybe I'll tackle that at some point. Though strictly speaking the weight at least for now seems very much secondary.

P.S

My consultant thought from the rapid onset and severity of my symptoms that it might be Type 1 and was very upset with my gp for not putting me straight on metformin, rather than suggest diet, but things appear to be working.

My gp said I had turned the clock back and suggested I might now be regarded as having pre diabetes. I do not know if this sounds correct to people or not and would be interested on peoples thought on that. The gp believes two factors to be contributory to me getting type 2 in the first place. a) the grand father was type 1 and b) I had very powerful chemotherapy drugs. Again I would be interested on people's thoughts in this regard. It sounds a little bit like speculation from the gp to me.

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I hope others will answer your queries.
I think your Dr. has a point with regard to the chemotherapy and suggest you read this article to help you understand why he said it. Depending on the type of cancer it can be a pre-cursor to diabetes.

I am pleased that you got the diabetes under control but the test would be if you went back to eating in a less structured way and ate more carbohydrates.
If you are now considered pre diabetic then you need to find an eating plan that you like and can adhere to and the general advice for Newly Diagnosed could help unless you feel the Atkins diet is forever.
