2 weeks ago I was taken into hospital and had a minor procedure on my bowel to remove impacted faeces (sorry for the graphic detail) and I was on IV antibiotics and then oral. The infection cleared but my blood sugars went a bit haywire.
I am a big guy and told I am insulin resistant. I lost the use of my pancreas due to pancreatitis, what's left is for all intents and purposes, dead.
So my long acting was 220 units per day and a maximum of 70 fast acting per meal. Over the course of a week in hospital, I have now been reduced to 135 and 20 respectively due to constantly having Hypos. This level has kept my sugar levels between 5 and 8.
I don't understand why I have had this massive drop. I'm not complaining but I wouldn't mind anyone having any theories?

When our bodies are fighting an infection or stressed for any reason, it becomes insulin resistant.
18 months ago, I had surgery and my insulin requirements increased by 50% for the next week.
My guess is your insulin requirements were elevated due to your body having to deal with the infection.

I read it as they fell not increased

I read it as fell after the week in hospital to sort out a long term problem which may have caused the insulin needs to rise.
I guess it depends if the higher requirements predated the now resolved problem but yes rereading it it I see your understanding of it more clearly. Hopefully you e given the understanding the op hoped for.

Hi @Romeowhiskey4,
I read as @helensaramay does, Infection --> insulin resistance and less exercise, more stress, ? more food eaten -> increased insulin requirements
infection gone -> insulin resistance reduced , less stress, less food -> hypos as insulin doses too high -> reduced insulin dose
I bet the hospital food intake and choices was quite different to your intake of food at home.
Enjoy the lower doses of insulin, a better diet and preventing the bowel troubles.:):):)
