Sudden High Blood Glucose on Low Carb Diet ???

Hi Everbody,
My other half is type 2 on 3 x 500mg metformin a day and 1 x januvia and a statin. ..his last fasting BG test at doctors was 10. He has recently gone on a very low carb diet and his readings started to improve a lot and have been between 6 - 7.5 two hours after eating. This looked promising for a couple of weeks but suddenly the past couple of days his BG readings have shot up to 10 and 11 two hours after eating. In particular his dawn phenomenon readings have been a lot higher, which seems to determine his daytime readings..ie if his morning reading is high.. the rest of the days readings will also correlate and be higher and vice versa. Please could someone suggest what maybe causing his sudden rise in his Blood glucose readings despite the low carb diet (no more than 40grams) a day.
Both of us are very perplexed by it. I suggested maybe he has an infection or something? I really don't know how to help him. His doctor is rubbish..suggests the usual slow release starchy carbs (yeah right!)
If anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would be ever so grateful to you..Thank you and best wishes.

When you say he is low carb, it might help if you give us a typical days menu, we may be able to help better.

A cold or upset stomach always pushes my levels by a couple of points - sometimes happens before I realise I have a cold coming.

Hi there, thanks loads for your reply,
I think he is eating a bit more than usual..he had four pork steaks at lunch and his reading was 10.4 two hours later..Could this push his readings too high possibly? Do you think he'd be better off eating smaller portions but more frequently ? Thanks again.

PS...Could have the tail end of a cold ..today he ate the following:

2 duck eggs and full fat mayo
chunk of cheese
handful of almonds
two squares of dark chocolate
4 pork steaks
half a small chicken ... he thinks thats it so far but he hash't had his tea yet!

what you have to remember is that everything (more or less!) gets converted to glucose ultimately.
4 pork steaks would send mine up for sure!

Protein will also convert to glucose so will push up bg levels although only by about 60% compared to carbs. Might be significant?

Hi guys,
Thanks loads for your help... I didn't actually realise he was eating so much...He is following the Dr Briffa "Escape the diet trap" diet book and I think he has interpreted it as eat as much as you like. Thanks loads everyone he is now going to restrict his portions! x

I hate to say this but he needs more veg and fewer pork steaks! I'd be able to cope with 2 if hungry - and a chicken usually lasts me 4 or 5 meals.

Also, how big was the "chunk" of cheese?

Have a look at Viv's Modified Atkins Diet in the Sticky Threads section. That will give you a list of low-carb veg to choose from - anywhere between 8oz and 14 oz of both salad, and other veg, per day. It also gives a list of other, acceptable low- or no-carb foods. If he sticks to this he'll get about 25g carb per day.

Try to get him to add in more veg and salad, and cut the protein a bit. Also mention that Metformin is supposed to suppress the appetite . . . no, it doesn't work for me, either!

Finally, and more seriously - keep a food diary for a couple of weeks, what he eats and when, and record his BG readings with it so you can look for links. If he gives my diet a go for two weeks, doesn't eat anything outside those lists, and his BGs still stay high, he should go back to the doctor. Occasionally someone will be diagnosed Type 2 to start with, only to find out later that they are a different Type. No need to worry yet - just bear it in mind.

Finally - how much plain water is he drinking? I try to get through 2 litres a day, including 2 cups of coffee. Dehydration can send levels up. His cold won't have helped.

Good luck! :D

Hi Viv,
Thank you.. i agree with everything you've said and will check out your diet...and yes he probably isn't drinking enough water either.
Thanks so much, we both feel much more positive now...Best wishes x

I'm with Viv, cut the portions size of protein, add lots of veg and salad, and drink lots of water. Viv is a martyr, I can't drink plain water, so add a little squash, it helps get it down during the day. Good luck.
