Hi guys, I'm new here.

For the past half year I've been having fasting glucose levels of between 5,8 and 6,6. I;ve been agressively cutting my carb and caloric intake and moderately exercising and have last 24 kilos in the past 4 and a half months. Last week I've started experiencing sudden symptoms of hypo's. Dizzyness, crabbiness, feeling weak and total lack of concentration. My numbers however were better than ever. 5,2, 5,9. I've had a blood test and as it turns out I had a fasting 5,2. For the past 3 mornings I'm fasting under 6 and my highest number after a meal has been a 7,4. But I'm consistently feeling awful and getting hypos which I remedy with juice or cookies. Can somebody tell me what is going on? Is my weightloss suddenly paying off and is my body merely adjusting to a new normal or is there something amiss?

Please help!

Hi and welcome to the forum. Well done on your weight loss!

Are you sure they are hypos, ie under 4? They sound like "false hypos" which are above 4 but feel like real hypos. I get them a lot, and they are not nice. They occur when our body is trying to get used to lower BGs, and in your case they could be due to you losing weight. Keep testing and monitoring how you feel, maybe in a notebook. If you don't feel better after eating something, you might need to see the doctor.

Also, are you feeling weak after standing up suddenly after lying down? If so this could be postural hypotension - low blood pressure. Can be fixed by waiting 10 seconds or so in a sitting position before standing up.

Thank you for the quick reply! I feel better after eating but not sufficiently. Are false hypos a temporary thing? How well does the body adapt? The postural hypotension is there too but overall my BP is ok.

Yes false hypos are usually temporary and they improve as the body gets used to lower BGs. It's impossible to say how long this will take. Keep in mind that there might be something else causing the symptoms and you might need to see your doctor.

Thing is also that the drop in fasting numbers wasn't gradual. It was from one day to the next. Could that be a problem?

It may explain why your body is finding the lower BGs a big change. It's a good thing though. I forgot to ask, are you on any medications?

If your body is trying to adjust to lower BS levels it should resolve itself within a couple of weeks. You say you have been aggressively reducing your carbs and calories which is great for weight loss but you have to renember the more you reduce your carb intake the more you have to increase your fat intake. Could you please let us know how many carbs and calories you would normally eat in a given day.
