Sugar / carb confusion!

Im not new to the idea of low carb dieting but I'm confusing myself about carbs and sugar in general and the more I think about it the more I confused I become

The daily recommended allowance for a non diabetic woman is 90g (I think!) and according to the newbie guide a liberal low carb would be 90 - 130g which would make the newbie guide completely wrong. So help me get rid of this confusion please!

Is the 90 - 130g overall carbs? For instance (this is totally made up) a slice of bread could be labeled as 15g of carbs with 5g of that coming from sugar. SO, when I am calculating how many carbs in having in a day do I count the 15g or 5g?

Please, please, please help!

Fiona.

You've got yourself confused! Sugar is just another carbohydrate, although a refined one and thus a bad one. The guideline daily level of carbs for a woman is 250grams. Forget the "of which sugar is" figure - 250 is the total. As a type 2 diabetic you need to reduce that figure. The amount varies from person to person. To find out how much you can tolerate you need to test ysing a blood glucose meter. It's worth starting off with 125 total grams a day to see how you go. If your BG is higher than about 8 two hours after eating, you need to reduce the number if carbs you had in that meal. Also, the type if carbs. High GI starchy carbs are the worse.Eventually you'll arrive at a level of carbs you can eat. Some are down below 50; others are ok with much more. If you can't get a meter from the doc, you should get one yourself. You can get meters cheap, even free, but it's the strips that cost so check and get a meter with the cheapest strips. Good luck!

Thanks for the fast reply. My head was full of wee motors going round in circles trying to figure this out.

I've bought a meter and so far I'd say most of my readings are around 8 or under 2 hours after eating. Most meals are pretty ok in terms of GI and carbs, e.g. everything is brown and grainy and always with veggies and salad. But its just getting used to not being able to eat the really good stuff

Again, thanks for the fast reply.

I personally don't make a distinction beween "Good" and "Bad" carbs. I am very careful with any digestible carbs, be they sugars or starches. In fact some sugars raise blood glucose less than starch does. The only totally acceptible carb to me is Cellulose, otherwise known as "dietary fibre".
