Sugar Cravings

So after Xmas had passed I started trying to gradually get through the little chocolate I had received. Little by little it would go down but then I find myself in the shops, buying packets of chocolate to eat after work, you know, like the small bars of KitKats or Dairy Milk. I've been wanting to get off it for a while but I can't seem to get control of myself.

After reading the Diabetes email that came out today, I have decided to cut it out. Starting tomorrow with a new meal plan.

For breakfast I want to be eating Porridge, Lunch will be 2 chicken breasts with a hint of seasoning and for Tea I want to have Tuna Sweetcorn and Pasta.
Snackwise, I was thinking along the lines of Apples and Bananas and any packaged meats.

There was also talk of Fenugreek on the email and it made me wonder whether to try those too.

Any tips and information will be appreciated.

The diet sounds great.
Dependent on which type of diabetes you've got, and how you control it (carb counting etc) I'd be extra careful of the fruit :)

I also get sugar cravings though! Drives me bananas (excuse the pun). I've found good snacks to be the weight watchers crisps, as they're vry low in carbs and calories (0.2g sugar in one bag)

Charley, do you understand that you need to be looking at total carbs, not just the 'of which sugars' bit ? Your body turns all carbs into glucose with relative ease.

Although better than most crisps at 62.9g per 100g (most are around 75g I think) you are still consuming 10g of carbs per bag. (For some people here that would be a quarter of their daily intake.)

Hi Tommy,

So you know that carbs are our enemy? Foods like pasta, rice, bread and potato should be reduced and be aware that fruit is not 'free' to diabetics. There is fructose in fruit (a natural sugar) and some people will get BG spikes. Check your levels before and after and make sure you can tolerate them.
 
I know that the carbs are enemies to us but Im in work from 2-10 and I'd need something that will be slow release and keep me going until I finish. Pasta is only 70-100g for me and its the only cards I would be eating other than the porridge
 
Oh I'm fully aware of having to look at the carbohydrate content. However I'm also aware that for many diabetics, carbs are not the 'enemy' as you put it. Many of is carb count and inject an adjustable dose, thus giving us the freedom to eat as and what/when we please.
For example, I've eaten masses of carbohydrates today,and due to my insulin have remained steady and within the 5-7mmol/l that I aim for.

Try telling someone like Steven Redgrave that carbs are the enemy!

Out of curiosity, what insulin regime are you on? X

I inject twice a day; 31 units in the morning and depending on whether I'll be having a bigger tea (at weekends) it's normally between 5 and 15 units. I have smaller teas with the job I do.

Fair enough, was just a bit concerned when you appeared to be highlighting the 0.2g of sugar.
