Sugar levels every where after triple bypass.

Hello every one, been some time since I have been on the forum.
Last Sept, I took a heart attack and stayed in hospital for 4 weeks until I had a triple bypass.
I have been out from hospital now for 7 months and I am recovering well - stop smoking and walking a lot.
But I have noticed my sugar level is all over the place - some times I am hitting 12.6 after my dinner.
I take one Metformin tablet in the morning and one at dinner time - and before my operation I was doing pretty well- hitting about 8.5 after my meals.
I don't know what it is- maybe the other tablets I am taking - blood thinners and cholesterol tablets, along with my heart tablets are fighting with the Metformin - who knows ?
It's been a tough time for me- never knew this would happen- but I have been giving a 2nd chance in life.
I am due to see my doctor soon - I will ask him if I can increase the Metformin.

Statins are know to raise levels if they are a recent addition. As are steroids if you take any of them.

What’s been happening with your diet? Eating more carbs maybe (of any colour or type)? Not sure how often you are testing but before meals and 2 hrs after might show you if it’s the food causing spikes. Ideally it shouldn’t be more than 2mmol higher after.

Glad to hear about the positives though. Important to remember them, not just the struggles.

Hi, I had a bypass almost exactly a year ago, what they actually do to us is brutal, I strongly advise not watching a bypass video lol, my point is this damage takes a very long time to repair itself, this is likely causing a similar effect to an infection etc. this is a pure guess I am not medical at all, I’ve researched the beta blockers I assume you are on and they don’t seem to do anything to bg, I didn’t know statins did this to bg as said above by HSSS I was put on the statins after a mini stroke six months earlier, but I’m lucky in the sense it’s easier for me to get numbers down, well done with the walking and general recovery, I was shocked how bad I felt after the op, enjoy your second chance

I sympathise with this. I actually went into remision just before my op even on hospital Eatwell food and M&S pastries to boot. But I was moved to a different hospital for the op and they put me on insulin even though I dod not need it. But their food was terrible vegan fare, and I peaked all over the place. It took me a about a month to get the levels under control again. You may be carbiferous again after the hospital food regime. I reduced my carbs quite strictly when discharged but not keto levels and it worked for me.

Had another heart attack again last year and another stint in hospital. They stopped all my sweeties incl the Metformin and my HbA1c rose up to 45. Back in control now but next HbA1c not till Nov so in the dark except that my daily readings are averaging about 6.3 mmol/l at the moment, so should be lower than 45 all being well.

The triple jump op should not be raising the bgl in itself, but some meds can affect it such as steroids and statins as mentioned previous.

Upping the Metformin will NOT bring your 12's down to the level you want to get to. It is not that strong a medication. You will either need to take on another diabetic med or have a serious look at your diet.

Did they give you a rolled up towel to hug? Mine was named Floppidoggrel in honour of the medication I was on.

Funny you say this- I received steroid injections in my shoulders on Thursday - could this be why I am hitting high numbers ?

A steroid injection will raise your blood sugar yes. As it gradually wears off, hopefully you'll see your blood sugar gradually reducing too. We're all different, but it can take a few weeks for this to happen.
