I am finding that my sugar levels are higher if I do not eat during the day, then as soon as I eat my sugar level drops. Does this mean that fasting is not really a good thing? I was reading on Living.com that for diabetics it is best to eat a breakfast as our sugar levels are more likely to be lower during the course of the day until lunch. I must admit, mine is higher if I do not eat. Do others have this same occurrence? Living.com also said that this is why our sugar levels are higher upon waking because we have not eaten. http://www.livestrong.com/article/418484-foods-that-dont-raise-sugar-levels-for-diabetes/

I need to eat soon after I get up. It doesn't need to be a lot. But it does need to be low carb. 1/3 avocado works for me. Some just need coffee and double cream.

Think that I will start to eat Brekky. I am not really a brekky person to Perhaps some berries and cream,or cheese and a few nuts.

well, how high are your levels then ? that´s the most important.

the body is able to transform proteins into glucose if one does not eat anything... it can then by the liver do that .. this is probably also why morning blood glucose is higher in most people in the mornings where we have not been eating in many hours...

you should not be conserned is my guess.. if your HbA1c is in the normal levels and if your blood glucose is usually not higher than 6 mmol when you have not been eating..

here is a link to some links of at what levels blood glucose seems to promote some of the bad conditions that diabetics many times get from an uncontrolled and high level of blood glucose in general :

This could be caused by a few things..
Might be your body dumping glucose out of the liver taking the opportunity to deplete stores while you aren't eating.
It could be an extended Dawn Phenomenon which may be halted by eating something fattty like cheese
or indeed a coffee with cream. You probably should experiment and see what happens.
As for fasting... for me I credit it (alongside LCHF) with reducing my BG greatly over a relatively short period of time.
However as we are all individual you need to find which works best for your body.

beware of nuts.. for quite a few of us they have the "once I start I find it very hard to stop" effect me included.

I think they have this the wrong way round. Insulin resistance is worse in the mornings, and improves a bit as the day progresses. You should find your levels lowest before evening meal. For this reason, if a meal is to be skipped it is better to be breakfast. If you eat breakfast, it is best to have as few carbs as possible, preferably zero. You mentioned berries and cream might be a possibility. That was a disaster for me, even with very few berries. (although I didn't have cream, I had FF Greek yogurt) I would try just cheese, or a couple of boiled eggs, or coffee with cream (I have decaff with cream and that works for me)

It is all a matter of experimentation, trial and error, and testing.

My sugar levels when I don't eat are around 5.9 to 6.2 when I eat it normally goes down to around 5.5 or to 5.7.. Mornings on waking around 6.4

It just sounds like your liver giving you a bit of a boost in the absence of carbs (glucose) as it is supposed to do. That is its job. It is what helps to keep everyone alive overnight and when fasting. Without it we might die.

Oh I see. I am very good on the Carbs, meaning I do stick to 20 grams a day, but to be honest my carb intake is not even that some days. Love my cheese, eggs, chicken, and loads of above ground veg. Some days I only have one meal a day, which typically would consist of meat, fish, chicken, and greens, broccoli and cauliflower. I grate some cheese over the veg. Or I will fry up some minced beef with spices and just a little onion, and add that to a 2 egg omelet, with a green side salad, or I spiralize courgettes for a nice stir fry. I do have berries and cream though..Will have to test after eating those me thinks

There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with your food choices at all.

As said, our livers will dump glucose when it thinks we need some. Our hormones monitor this, and when we have enough glucose the hormones stop the liver from dumping. It balances everything out - in a normal healthy body. However, if we are insulin resistant, these hormones don't get through the cell barrier to the liver, so it continues to dump glucose even when not needed. The secret is to reduce insulin resistance. Once that is done, the hormones will get through, and the liver will stop dumping when it isn't necessary. A way to stop insulin resistance is to eat very low carb and intermittent fasting. But it can take time! You are going about it the right way, carry on and it will happen. Your liver isn't dumping very much anyway - your increased levels are fairly negligible. It could even be a touch of PIR (physiological insulin resistance) which is quite different from diabetic insulin resistance, but I won't confuse you with the details, just say that this state is common in very low carb diets but is temporary.

Thank you so much for your reply. You have explained to me very well. I will just keep an eye on things as we all do and hope for it all to settle. I have only been on low carb for around 10 weeks, so all new to me still

Have you ever tried just a piece of cheese? Maybe I could do that instead of later in the day. Just curious

No, I haven't tried that. The coffee and cream does it for me and keeps me going until lunch time, which is over 5 hours away!
I am going to try the coffee and cream thing Bluetit as to be honest |I am not keen on eating so early in the day like Brekky. It may just work for me also
