Sugar levels in pregnancy

Hello,
As some of u may know I've started on the omnipod recently. I really like it a lot more than I thought I would and levels have stabilised! (Between 4.7 and 7.0 all day yesterday)
I have also been given the go ahead by the dsn to start trying for another baby!! (Eek!!)

I did have a problem with my pod on Friday night tho and it got me thinking.
I don't know if the tube had become blocked or something. I tested my bloods and they were 15.7, but no ketones, I left it an hour and in that time it had risen to 20.8!!! I checked my pod site and there was a bit of blood around the pod and watermarked like the insulin had leaked a little. So a swift pod change, But as it was less than 4 hours since my meal and I still had iob it wouldn't let me correct (I was going to correct using the pen as told to do) but it suggested no bolus? I don't know how much of that bolus i got as it had leaked? I increased basal by 50% for an hour and it started to come down. My sugars were hard to control during my last pregnancy but I don't think I was ever up at 20! Now this was a pod issue and out of my control, but il a little worried now about if I do become pregnant! Is that blip ok because it was corrected quickly? And what do I do if my pod won't suggest a correction and I want to bring my sugar down?

May be silly questions but it's just been on my mind X X X

@Sarahkylie88 Let me tag @noblehead because he uses the Omnipod and may have suggestions. May be you can override it manually?

I have a pump, but it's a Vibe. I can bolus and correct whenever I want, so have never come across that issue. Obviously, the pump doesn't know that you had a leakage issue, so it's making a suggestion without knowing the full story. If I needed a correction and I couldn't do it on my pump for some reason, I'd correct using a pen. Speak to your DSN, of course, if you're at all unsure.

In pregnancy, some highs do happen. My consultant said a short term high should be ok as long as I got back into range asap. That's why testing lots is so important. You can then spot highs, correct them, and only have brief high sugars goung round your body.

You did the right thing changing the Pod. In my experience, the majority of pump issues are due to 'bad' sets.

I can only second what azure said.
I'm pregnant at the moment (32 weeks) and have had this happen to me 3-4 times during my pregnancy and ended up with 20+ blood readings and ketones, in fact it happened yesterday!
I didn't stress and fixed it as quickly as I could, there is nothing else you can do.
My pump also told me not to correct because it thought I had already had insulin but I over rid it and did anyway, I'm sure you know this but the advice would be to double your correction if you're that high, especially if you start getting ketones. Then I just waited for it to come down.

As long as you recognise it and correct it quickly it'll be okay. As I said, I'm 32 weeks now and my baby is doing well :)

All the best!

Thank you! I think the thing is I deal with things but when I have to plan I'm a worrier! Im better if they just happen... Like my first pregnancy... That just happened and I dealt with everything as it came up! I think the thing is in probably just over thinking but it didn't happen on pens! Thanks for the reassurance X X x

@Sarahkylie88, I've had this happen a couple of times myself, if you run your finger across the adhesive next to the cannula end of the pod then smell your finger you can generally tell if it's leaking (as insulin has distinctive aroma), on the occasions where I've done this and found my pod was leaking the adhesive has been blood stained around the cannula when the pod was removed.

As you bolused earlier and still had IOB the pump wouldn't suggest a bolus dose as it is unaware of the pod issue, but you can manually bolus anyway, just go to Bolus then press NO to the Enter Current BG screen and Are you going to eat then just enter the amount of units you want to bolus for, I try and exercise some caution and just give a reduce dose if unsure how much insulin has been administered previously.

TBH the pod issues do settle down and once your more experienced you'll find you have less issues with them, in the first month I had a few issues with the pods but looking back now many were through my own doing.

agree with what @noblehead has just said.
when you get to the are you going to eat now , you can say no and it then shows 0 for bolus amount but you can use the up arrow and change the bolus dose to whatever you wish( this is the manual override thate azure is referring to .

all the best !

I will try that, I mean it did come down, it's just it's almost out of your hands isn't it! Next time I'll try just give myself a couple of units! I just wasn't sure whether to try that or not.
On the whole I do like it and am growing in confidence every day. Especially to add the little changes here and there. Thank you. I need to just stop worrying lol! X X

don't forget it is early days on the pump for you-- i was exactly the same - i didn't know you could override it at first -- then came the stage when i realised i could but was afreaid-- and now i evaluate my readings , look at patterns and make my decision based on that.
