Sugar levels - sudden;y high

Hi

I've been a diabetic for eight months now and I thought I finally had some control with sugar levels being between 4-7 in the morning and between 7-9 two hours after each meal. This was the case probably, after three months of being diagnosed. I was on steroids due to an eye allergy since April through to mid June and the sugar levels were controlled. For the last two weeks everythings gone out of control and whilst I have not changed my diet, eat similar foods regularly, I find that my sugar levels after two hours range between 13 to even 20. I know no reason for this to happen and am now looking for causes. I may have put on a little weight, say a few pounds and this is could be the cause but am not sure.

I used to take 4 units for every meal, during the summer/hot weather this decreased to 3 units. since the last two weeks, I increased the units back to 4, but now find, over the last two to three days that even 5 or 6 units isn't enough. I feel that the insulin, Novorapid is not working as it should, I'm injecting 6-7 times a day as opposed to 4 and already find it tough injecting so am not finding it easy! I have always taken 8 units of Lantus at night and don't know if this should change. I don't have a diabetic nurse, have changed doctors for the third time, and made a Doctors appointment for Monday early this week - as it was the next available date.

Could a change in the body cause this? If so what type of change could it be? I've just turned 32, have not had any significant changes in anything but am looking for answers and in all honestly, don't quite know who to turn to. Am feeling tired once the high levels are under control. Thankfully work is keeping me busy but once this stops I know I'm going to suffer an feel upset and down about this

Does anyone have any advice on what could be happening or what I should do?

Hi Mandi

Sorry to hear you are not feeling too good. This same thing happened to me at the beggining of this year. All of a sudden I was getting really high readings even when I hadnt eaten. I changed my basal to levimir and increased it, took 10 to 15 tests a day and adjusted my bolus. Tried everything. After about 3 months of this happening I realised there was a pattern. It was happening for about 8 to 10 days then better for a few days then happening again for 4 or 5 days. This was cyclical so i put it down to hormones. I have an implant and it was not due for replacement for another year but I asked the doctor to replace it. Now, things are back to normal.
Do you think it could be hormones for you?

Mandi i would also say that in your case it could be the end of the "honeymoon period" so could be you will need to increase your dose. Best check with your care team.

Maryrachel

Thankyou, I had no idea there was a honeymoon period but it makes sense! I'm taking 6 units for each meal now and my levels are much better controlled now. It seems that when I hypo I need to eat less to get back to normal. In the evening when my readings are about 5, it seems that I can cope with this whereas before there was a danger of hypoing during the night.

Thankyou so much for your help. I hope you are well too.

Hi, mandi :) I think maryrachel is right in suggesting that you're coming out of the honeymoon period, that's the first thing I thought when I read your post. You should have been told soon after diagnosis about the honeymoon phase because all the nice, normal suagr levels many of us experience at first can lead us into a false sense of security that this diabetes lark is actually quite easy. If you're coming out of it then you will find that your levels are very erratic and unpredictable.

Do hope you're able to get yourself sorted and feeling better soon

xx
