I was wondering what other type 1 diabetics range at before driving? And what levels they shouldn’t be driving at (high blood reading).

I was told not to drive over 18 mmol and obviously anything below 4 as it is a hypo.

Do you drive a certain amount of time before having to have a stop and re-check?

Any advice would be helpful :)

This is the link to the DVLA guidelines.

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/diabetes-mellitus-assessing-fitness-to-drive#diabetes-mellitus

Although exact levels aren't mentioned, most of use '5 to drive' as the lower limit.

The relevant section is copied from the page on the link.

'Group 1 car and motorcycle
  • blood glucose testing no more than 2 hours before the start of the first journey
    and
  • every 2 hours while driving
  • applicants will be asked to sign an undertaking to comply with the directions of the healthcare professionals treating their diabetes and to report any significant change in their condition to the DVLA immediately.
More frequent self-monitoring may be required with any greater risk of hypoglycaemia (physical activity, altered meal routine).'

hope this helps...

Hi. It is a grey area between 4 and 5. 5 to drive is the safest but if I'm between 4 and 5 I take some carbs e.g. glucose tablets before starting to drive. I wasn't aware of a top limit but I guess 18 is already too high for comfort
