Hindsight is a wonderful thing for all of us. Would we all still be Type 2's if we hadn't indulged? Some never did and they still ended up Type 2. Some indulge all their lives and don't succumb to Type 2.

I don't think the Stone Age man had it too good either if you read some of the papers on life expectancy. If they didn't die from hunting accidents, injuries fighting others, child birth and infections..... their life span wasn't that long. Did some of the children and young adults die of untreated Type 1? Would some of them have succumbed to Type 2 if they had lived long enough? I suspect we will never know.

The discussion about the metabolism of fructose/glucose is fine. I'm not convinced about his 'cure' for T2 .
I know people who have watched this video and think they shouldn't eat fruit as a result. Lustig does say that if it's eaten as with fruit , with the fibre it's fine but some people don't notice that bit.

His data though is from the US and doesn't reflect that in the UK and Australia.
In UK, US and Australia, as we all know, obesity has risen From 1983-2003 it has risen, In Australia by 300%, UK slightly less and US slightly more

During the same period( 1983-2003) consumption of refined sugars has decreased in the UK and Australia and risen in the US
(Just a quick apology to SId, some more statistics  )
.
In the UK, consumption of refined sucrose fell by 10% , thats a fall of 4kg per person per year.At the same time consumption of other refined sugars rose from 0 to 1kg per person. So there was an overall fall in consumption of 5%
In Australia, consumption of refined sucrose dropped by 23%, (11kg per person) . Consumption of other sugars increased from a small baseline to 3kg per person. There was an overall fall in consumption of 16%
In the US consumption of refined sucrose fell by 20% (7kg), consumption of other sugars, mainly High Glucose Fructose syrup increased by 138% (22kg per person per year). Total consumption rose by 23% (13kg

It is possible, that these averages conceal a huge range and that those people who have gained the weight may have eaten/drunk a lot more sugar sweetened food and they were balanced by others eating/drinking a lot less, but somehow I think there are a lot of people here that would disagree with that proposition!

What has increased in Australia, and I suspect in the UK is the consumption of 'chocolate, cakes and cookies, pizza and packet chips' (crisps) ie high foods that combine refined carbs and refined fats in dense packages.

These foods that combine carbs and refined fats:

breakfast cereals: vegetable oils (refined fats as phoenix puts it)
bread: majority of supermarket bread contains mono and di-glycerides of fatty acids (emulsifiers)
cookies/biscuits: vegetable oils and emulsifiers
crisps: sunflower oil sounds innocent but again it's likely that it's sunflower oil that's refined to preserve the shelf life
... the list goes on

I believe 'refined' oils means that the formation of chemical bonds in the oils get changed -which changes how our bodies are able to deal with these foods. I'm no expert on this so wouldn't want to be quoted as such on this.

PS great post phoenix

Great post as always phoenix
