Summer begins

Hi guys…
What’s your ideal start to summer?
A road trip?
Calm mornings?
Going on holiday?
… the goddamn hospital?
I nearly died but I’m alive and most of my summer plans for the week are cancelled as I spent since four am last night to two pm today in the hospital struggling with high ketones and even now my sugars are fluctuating.
Anyway I came home and spent a lot of time asleep, did my online class, fell asleep again, and just had dinner…
I didn’t realise how serious the doctors were when they said it could be life threatening but I just wanted to share…
Seriously, what’s your ideal start to summer?
 
Well my ideal start definitely wouldn’t be a night in hospital.

For me summer is walks by the sea, a cup of good coffee in a seaside cafe, putting the roof down on my convertible car, bbqs, salads, home made ice cream (made with cream and eggs, sweetener, fruit from the garden), picking blackcurrants, strawberries, raspberries, tomato’s and cucumber from the garden.

I prefer to go on holiday in September and May……but I’m not tied to school holidays. I’m not a fan of very hot weather, it makes my blood sugars very unpredictable, going high then crashing etc.
 
Poor you @Hoodiegirl3 Not a great start to your summer break, glad to hear you’re ok. I’m T2 diet only but I’ve noticed on the forum how many of those on insulin are saying their numbers are all over the place in this weather.

Look after yourself & make sure you keep an eye in those numbers & ketones
 
Hey @Hoodiegirl3 . Sorry you have had a rough start to school holidays. Hope things improve, and you manage to fill your days with fun activities.

I started summer early. It is an advantage of being retired and not having to consider school term times. Have had a UK seaside holiday, late June, which was ideal in a heatwave. That was my start to summer. Swimming in sea, walking on fells and in woodlands. Meeting for leisurely meals with family and friends. I also like the longer hours of daylight and already notice sunset getting earlier.
I don’t like heat, so summer days I tend to get up early, get out for walk before it gets too hot. Stay up late into the evening and sit in the cool of the garden. Look forward to September, and the prospect of what is often described as an Indian Summer. When the weather is slightly cooler but bright and sunny, but with the noticeable change in the seasons about to happen.Sorry if this seems mean, but generally have a holiday when schools are back, everywhere is quieter, and accommodation is cheaper. Somewhere rural, away from the noise of the city. So that I can get out in nature, and just relax.
 
My ideal summer would be relaxing, I’m ginger and burn if I even so much as look at the sun so I tend to either lather up in sun cream or hibernate indoors by a fan. I do enjoy sitting outside in the evenings though.

Unfortunately my summer looks different this year as I am still in hospital (unrelated to diabetes) but I’m making the most of it by going outside, taking short trips away from hospital and doing my all time favourite thing of building Lego!! I’ve also matched my nails to summer so they’re currently a pastel yellow
 
Urgh, your start of summer is definitely not the one I'd choose!
I hope you'll feel better soon, doing online classes after a night in hospital is no mean feat.

I'm working through the summer. I'm a bridge operator in the Netherlands, letting all the holidaying people with boats through my bridge. Summer is the busiest time of th year for me.

On my days off I'm sailing myself! (If I don't have other stuff to do.)

5 decades ago I was dying on my feet & labeled “diabetic.” With a week in hospital at the start of the summer break?
We also had a heatwave & a “drought” I got sunstroke too..

Rather not do “that” again..

As an adult. I hydrate accordingly & adjust my basal. It seems to get me through.. Easier said than done.
 
So lucky, a bit different for me but we are looking at narrow boat life or campervan life.

That sounds like heaven, often say to my hubby if our home circumstances were different we’d sell up everything & just travel in a camper van until either we run out of money or fall off the mortal coil - whatever came first lol

School caretaker here in work for 4 weeks then 2 weeks in Gran Canaria.
Love the sunshine and when in the canaries i lose weight and get this........
The Canary islands are fab u lous but they don't know how to cook a decent spud.
I love spuds and even love the word "spud" and have them every day in the UK.
Two weeks in the canaries with no spuds so i lose weight and when i return to the UK i become resistent to insulin.
Its a funny how do you do but it happens every time.
51 years a type 1 and not much phases me and feel for people who struggle with levels and wish i could infect others with my good control but i also know my good control only works for me.

I have worked out my supply of Levemir will last until after my Jollies then i'm changing to Tresiba so lets see how i adapt to that!

Nice to hear about your summer plans!
I’m sorry to dump my problems on you but does anyone ever have or ever gotten furious on small things? I mean right after I left the hospital, so much frustration is coming to me over dumb things. I used to have anger problems but learned to control them but now it’s just bad and explosive…
Once again… sorry about this…
 
Anger is for a reason. It is to protect you. I used to fear that emotion. Now I try to sit with it and work out how I should use it, along with the other emotions that can work with it to make me feel more balanced again. Sometimes we can do something about the things that made us angry. Other times we have to just wait. You have had a lot of disappointment, this past few weeks. So, you are bound to be feeling emotional..

If I haven’t explained very well, try to see the Pixar cartoon Inside Out. Sort of sums up emotional turmoil.

I must admit it is a favourite of mine, too. It came at a time I was struggling with emotions, particularly anger and loss. It explained and helped me deal with a trauma from long ago. Which seemed ridiculous for a mature person that I was supposed to be, but it worked.
