Supplements

Hi Chalky,

In the past I have tried cinnamon (in powder form) and karella (in capsule and natural form). The cinnamon was delicious, the karella was reminiscent of rancid cat pee on a hot day, but I can't say that either had any noticable affect on my blood sugar.

I also tried cinamon and it seemed to have little effect. I have also bought some fenugreek tablets but I have to take them 3 times a day and I am starting to smell of celery so I am unsure whether I will continue plus it has had little effect so far. I also take a multivitamin once a day but the one without iron.

One of the problems that we all have is trying to sort the facts from the hype. I've just done a Google search on pumpkin seed oil and, depending on which site you look at, it seems to be claimed as a cure for just about everything from cancer to ingrowing toenails, with diabetes somewhere in the middle. One thing I didn't find was a single scientific research paper examining its effectiveness. I might just be an old sceptic, but to me that says that it is almost certainly snake-oil and a cure for absolutely nothing!

No no, not snake oil, pumpkin seed...
Well, with BS of 19 - 20, I'm willing to try (almost) anything. Except incest and folk-dancing, as O. Wilde said.

Hi Grumpy,

Your blood sugar level is very high but it is only a reflection of the amount of carbohydrate that you eat. The only sure way for a type 2 to reduce BS is to reduce the carbs. Medication can help but can't do it all on its own. Similarly some of the various herbal extracts like cinnamon, karella and possibly pumpkin seed might have a very slight effect, but probably no more than a 0.5mmol reduction. One supplement that I believe has been tried successfully by a few members is Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA). This is a powerful anti-oxidant but also lowers insulin resistance. If you enter it in the search option at the top of the screen I am sure you will find some references to it.

Yes I use ALA mainly to sort out my funky liver, it gives a reduction of about 0.5 in my overall BG, knocks around another 1/2 point off my postprandials and leaves me less prone to liver dumps or lows. This is around 10% of what I have achieved by diet. Not eating breakfast cereal drops me at least 5 points.

When supplements work (ALA and bitter melon have some success stories in some individuals) this is about the most you can expect from them

I'm on my second day of low-carb and can already see a dip; I'm desperate to be legal by the next time I see the DSN or she'll double my metformin, which I hate. Two hours after lunch I was 13.6 today...better!

Hi Grump, how many metformin are you on at the moment? Just nosey as I was on 1 a day and the specialist asked me to go to 2 and if that didn't work try 3. I was complaining that I can't get mine below 7 but I think I need to shut up :) I have just started taking 3 today to see if that helps. I didn't want to take more than 1 but it seems I am fighting a losing battle at the moment and hopefully I will be able to control it and lower them again. Good luck with it.

I'm only on 1 as I'm a newbie. But i took my 2 hour PP (see? I'm learning JARGON!!!!) and it was 7.2...I'm so PLEASED...that I drank a large glass of white wine and probably undid all the good...:D

YAY that's great :)

Many people don't get much from metformin until it's been racked up to 1500 - 2500 mg. Also it works synergystically with exercise, growing muscle and using it improves insulin resistance and glucose disposition. Patience! you're getting there

Thanks, that's the answer I was looking for, i.e. it's not going to happen over night. I had my first BS of 5.1 yesterday so was over the moon and starting to see the good thing in low carbs which has motivated me thankfully as I was starting to get annoyed with the 'diet'. Whole new lease of life over the weekend and got a big pan of cauliflower on to try the mash with my sunday dinner :)

Sometimes it goes the other way too, for some inexplicable reason I suspect I had a semi-hypo last night, this morning I was 5.6 when I should have been under 5 and my breakfast which should have left me at 5.8 - 6.3 shot me up to 7.6. Infections and other such things can mess you up more than you were expecting, but overall you shoud be seeing a downward curve

i am interested to know the about supplements.please inform me and help me give me good suggestion

I really don't think suppliments or diet works .I started out on a diet for two years which didn't work my readings all went up then I had the usual metformin and glickaside, now only insulin works for me , also I find excersise works too so have joined a fitness club.I also think people worry too much what they eat just eat the normal way every normal person does ,cut out fat and sugar/carbs. eat what you like .by the way I take extra vitamin B as I'm told its helps to protect you from complications.
