Hey. I am 34 and my doctor called to say found sugar in urine. But my Hba1c test come back fine.
I've got do fasting blood test now to what that comes back with.
They also given me test meter, 2 hours after eating I've been getting reading from 9 up to 15.
Got wait two weeks to do blood test.......feel like very long two weeks to find out what's going on

Hi welcome to the forum,

I remember that wait well and it’s hard trying not to worry, I’m sorry your having to go through that.

It’s good that your doc has given you a metre to test, most would just wait for the fasting blood test. I’m a very data driven person so I would gather a little more info so those readings are in context.

For example I’d list what I was eating and test before I ate & then 2hrs after. The reading before you ate will give you a baseline & the reading after will tell you how your body responded to that food.

The numbers you have mentioned are in the diabetic range BUT it’s a good sign that your hba1c is fine. This reading is an average of the last 3 months, so if that’s ok this is a new problem & you have chance to get on top of it.

Have you had any of the classic symptoms? Weight loss, drinking loads, going to the toilet a lot & being really tired? What prompted the original tests?

Hi there, yes, you must be worried. As already said, it will help you (and them) massively if you record exactly what you are eating and in what measures, as well as testing before the meal and 2 hours afterwards. Also, when you get up and at any other time if you are feeling out of sorts. Your numbers are high regardless of your hb1ac test so if you find over the next two weeks that they are constantly high (I'd say over 10 and into the teens), then don't wait for the end of the 2 weeks, contact your GP to let them know. The problem can be that before a diagnosis (whether you turn out to be diabetic or not, or what type etc), if your levels stay very high, you would also need to be testing for ketones (if they are present and your glucose is high, that could be dangerous). If for example, you turn out to be type 1 then the weeks preceding a diagnosis could be high risk for a condition called DKA (type 2s also can get this, it's all very complicated). In conclusion, keep on testing and don't hesitate to contact your GP at ANY time. x

You don’t say what you’ve eaten to get those levels after 2 hours

The only reason I say that is it’s possible to get a post meal high and even have sugar in urine and not be diabetic.. but you’d have to massively over eat, more than the body can manage in 2 hours to achieve this

If in the other hand you are having a sensible meal not heavily overladen with carbs then there is a good chance of diabetes.. the hba1c could be ok as diabetes can come on fast and the hba1c is for 3 months

You don’t say anything about what lead you to seeing the GP in the first place

Rapid weight loss for example is a classic symptom of untreated T1

Keep an eye on your readings, keep a record of what you eat and hopefully in a couple of weeks you’ll get the answers you are looking for

Hi Searley, can a non diabetic reach a level of 15?, especially as the poster is saying they are getting (more than one off) levels of between 9 and 15. I always thought that even a massive eater would not go much above 11 and that their body would bring it down within 2 hours or so. That's very interesting. Also, if it is type 1 then you can go well above 15 without eating anything.

Thank you all for your comments.
I had the hba1c as rotiune check up because I had Gestational diabetes. But I've been fine for past 8 years.
Until a week ago out of the blue I felt so ill. I was drinking so much, passing alot of urine and I never felt fatigue like it before. This prompt me to speak to my GP and knows about my family history of type 1, 2 and MODY. The GP decided to check my urine which showed sugar.
These readings I get can be from me eating a slice of toast with white coffee and a sweetener for breakfast
Or from roast dinner.
I will not touch fresh juice as the surgar in it will increase my levels then I start to feel ill.

Yes but you have to massively over eat to do it

I know someone who tried to fake diabetes doing this and they were able to get higher than 15 they had sugar in the urine but it wasn’t significant enough to affect the hba1c much.. and still 8/9 years later they are not diabetic

Diabetic or not there is a limit to how much the body can process in 2 hours

But with regular eating then no a non diabetic should not reach those numbers

If I were you. Knowing you are getting readings of more than 13 I’d goto the the pharmacy and get some ketostix you only need test when in excess of 13 just to make sure you are not getting high ketones

It certainly sounds possible especially with a history and if it’s come on fast it wouldn’t affect the hba1c yet

Monitor if you get any major symptoms before the blood test then contact the gp or call 111 for advice
