Survey reveals ignorance

Novo Nordisk and Ipsos Emirates Health conducted a survey in ten countries of the Middle East and Northern Africa (MENA) region.
41% of respondents are at risk of developing diabetes. Despite a high awareness level of the scale of the disease, only one in two respondents consider diabetes to be a severe or a very severe disease. Myths about diabetes also remain very common such as 31% of Algerian respondents believe that diabetes is contagious.... Stress was ranked as a leading cause of diabetes across the region (39%).... Half of respondents (52%) declared that stroke cannot be caused by diabetes.

Given the misunderstandings unearthed here maybe there is scope for another sticky of what DM is and isn't? Just a thought. 8)

I'm just amazed that it takes a survey to reveal ignorance of diabetes Jim, I don't think I've ever talked to a non diabetic who has any real understanding of it

These surveys conform suspicions and still surprise me... but then pre-diagnosis I'd say I was ignorant, not sure I knew there was more than one type. When the GP told me I though oh **** how am I going to cope with shooting up every day? The relief that I wasn't T1 sort of ameliorated the impact for a while.
That's why I thought maybe a thread for absolute beginners where nothing is assumed would be useful. I am sure poeple find their way here looking for basic info... or is there a FAQ out there already? I dunno coz I don't need to go looking any more. It takes a while ferreting it out as it IMHO is scattered. WP is OK but those pages are too medical. 8)
