Sweet tooth!

Hi guys,

I was wondering if any of you noticed an increase in cravings for carby/sugary things since being diagnosed? I was diagnosed at 21 and prior to that enjoyed a bar of chocolate a few times a week but now (at 25) anything sweet doesn't last more than 10 seconds in our house  and if sweets are in front of me I cant help but eat them! once i have one I want them all!

I really want to get the amazing control a lot of you guys have as my BG tends to hover aroound the 10-12 mark with the occasional 6 or 7 and the occasional seriously high. how do you cope with cravings? or get rid of them?

I need to find some will power!

I'm at uni, and am surrounded by chocolate and crisps (its seems to be the only snack food available!) which doesnt help, and I tend to graze so its not easy to take lots of stuff with me as i'd have to take a suitcase! any suggestions?

I have been told that highish BG increases cravings, has anyone else experienced this before?

Thanks

Nomi :D

I get terrible cravings when my sugars are high - which is the worst time to be wanting a chocolate biscuit! When I'm hypo and could benefit from a biscuit or two I usually feel sick and the last thing I want to do is eat! Ain't diabetes fun?! ;)

Hi Nomi,

I don't really get cravings as I didn't really have a sweet tooth prior to diabetes, try opting for seeds or nuts as snacks or you could chop-up some carrot, cucumber or celery and make a dip for when you are feeling peckish :)

I think the cravings during high BGs are because you don't have enough insulin around to get the excess glucose into your cells and the cravings are the body's way of telling you to eat some quick carbs because the cells want some glucose. But in our case it's flawed. That's my theory anyway ;)

Now I've just had to have two squares of 90% chocolate :shh:

Let's face it, Noblehead - seeds, nuts and chopped veg are just no substitute! ;)

In all seriousness, Nomi, Novlehead does offer some good suggestions here. I'm more likely to crave sweet things if my sugars are high - no idea why, it just seems cruel to me! I'm also a bit of a snacker! Working in an office there are always treats in the kitchen and we seem to get sent promotional boxes of chocolates at least once a week. My will power is awful and it can be hard to say no. Having some healthy (but perhaps not quite so exciting) snacks to hand definitely helps. Raw veg, fruit, nuts, whatever. If I really fancy something a bit sweeter I'll usually go for some popcorn - not the toffee coated variety! Supermarkets usually have some lower fat, and lower sugar, varieties.

I survived three years at uni and, trust me, even university towns stock healthier snacks ;)

Yes that's how I had it explained to me.
