Can I ask what's the best sweetener to use ? Been warned off Aspartame, was recommended Xylitol then heard not to use it ! Totally muddled now, and wanted to make the husband some nice low-carb biccies!

There have been studies saying there are risks, there are none, they're bad, they're good....

Personally i use Splenda. It doesn't have an aftertaste, and it works.
Just use whichever one your hubby likes, because frankly some of them taste awful to me.

Pick one, if your hubby likes it and he's fine with it, then bingo.

Hi Ming

Stevia is a natural sweetener and has minimal side effects but it is quite expensive. It can be obtained through the web. Check google for all detailed information!

Best wishes

Marsha

TY everybody. Expensive wouldnt be possible for long though... I'd be interested in Sweetex too. In learnign more about all of them really.

Looking up sweeteners on You Tube will give a lot of interesting answers-it's quite frightening what we actually put in our bodies.

Hi Ming

I use ZSweet which is a fairly new product and information on it can be found on this website. Go to the Home Page and look under Diabetes Products.

I have used this in cooking Fergus's cheesecake (which is scrummy), scones, and almond biscuits. It does not raise my bg levels. However, it is expensive!

For cooking the best for flavor and consistancy is SPLENDA

For tea / coffee I found the best tasting is "Sweetness & Light" can be found in all supermarkets in the UK and is made by Silver Spoon, the sugar manufacturer.

It says on the pack

Carbohydrate per 100g = 71g (this sounds high but you would never use that amount) as you would just use one tablet. ( I only drink coffee and I always took 2 spoons of sugar ) Now I take one tiny sweetner and it is much the same taste.

1 sweetner carbohydrate = 0.04g and 0 fat.

So try these.

We eat sugar because it makes things taste nice and not because it is an essential food group. It does dreaful things to your teeth and your appetite, even if you don't have diabetes... So bear this in mind when you are looking at the horrid reports about the other options for sweetening.

Sweet treats are just that - a treat not a staple. We have them because they are good for the soul rather than the body, so I'm not going to lose any sleep over the Spenda I used to day, or the Xylitol I will be using in something I'm planning to make at the weekend.

And if someone is having constipation as a result of recently adopting a low carb diet, well I'd say it would come as more of a blessed relief than anything else.

You need to get things in to perspective  :D
