Switching to a pump?

Hey Everyone,

I am thinking of switching to a pump. I was on a pump when I was first diagnosed in 2006 and I had a bad experience. I didn't have the discipline yet to control my diabetes properly so the freedom of the pump caused me to get into some really bad habits. I put on a ton of weight and had some body confidence issues (and being strapped to a pump didn't help with the body image stuff). When I was on the pump before I always felt like I was sick and it was a constant reminder of my diabetes.

Now, with more time and knowledge, I am really looking to a pump to help with my control and quality of life, but I wonder if I will still have that feeling of illness and insecurity about having the pump physically on me.
Has anyone else had a similar experience when switching to the pump?
I know that there are more options available now, is there a pump that you recommend for features? Or ones that seem to interfere less with day to day life?

I'm on the Omnipod Pump which is a tubeless pump so isn't too intrusive, but couldn't possibly say how you would feel second time around Cassandra, but pumps will have come on a long way since 2006 and I'm sure many more members will reply to your thread to offer help and support.

Good luck.

Hi Cassandra :)

I'm moving this to the pump forum for you :) I've been on a pump (without any breaks) for almost 12 years. I've found it gives me so much freedom. For me, the biggest thing is being able to have my basal rate exactly as my body needs. No long acting insulin could ever achieve that.

My pump is an Animas Vibe. I love it :) I don't use the Dexcom CGM with it as I can't afford it at the moment, but I like having that option.

I dont find my pump intrusive or a reminder of diabetes. I actually think my pump looks rather cool

I started on the Accu-chek Insight pump 17 day ago after being on MDI for 43 year and got to say I much prefer the pump, even the more work that is needed with it. The tubing can get in the way a little so I may try a short length but apart from that all is good and I do not miss the multiple daily jabs one little bit :)
