Another question from me :p

For the last couple of years, especially if the weather is warm. my ankles and feet swell. I imagine this is fluid retention but what causes it? Is it linked to diabetes? What can i do about it? (my shoes are uncomfortable to say nothing of it gets difficult to flex my foot so how can I ride/)
Any advice as per usual is GREATLY appreciated ;)

Am also following as I have this problem too. Have raised with doc but not bothered. Puts me off wearing shorter dresses as I don't want to look like the elephant woman!

Not another question Shelly ;)

''Swelling of the legs and feet is called peripheral edema. This type of mild, painless swelling is common. When the swelling is heat-related, it is referred to as heat edema. Heat edema occurs when heat causes the blood vesicles to dilate while the person remains in a prolonged upright sitting or standing position. As a result, fluids pool in the legs.''

I suffered from swollen ankles (left one in particular after I damaged my knee!) for many years before I got diabetes. It's always worse in hot weather, but has also happened when I've had other problems with my legs. The swelling can be related to poor circulation, which I assume could be aggravated by or associated with your diabetes?

My doctor originally told me to "rest with your feet up higher that your bum" - his actual words. :joyful::joyful: But has now recommended that I wear support stockings. He has also suggested doing a little exercise to strengthen my calves, standing and going up and down on tiptoe; or going up & down stairs on tip toe, too - which I told him would be the death of me as I'm not always very safe on stairs now...:(

PS I've had to look for extra wide shoes/sandals so I can get my feet into them in the hot weather.

That's interesting as I find my ankles are more swollen if I wear flat shoes!

My ankles swell - a bit - in most weather, and a bit more in hot weather. Really hot weather makes my legs feel achy and leaden.

For years I put it down to my weight, and told myself I should get slim and all my troubles would disappear. Yeah, right.

Anyway, about 3 years ago I visited the endocrinology clininic and the registrar gave me Spironolactone (sp?) for PCOS. Apparently, PCOSers often have 'lazy kidneys, and it makes the kidneys work harder'. Her words, not mine.

I saw absolutely no benefit from the drug for my PCOS, but my ankles became the slim wee things I remember from my teens! Astonishing. Now I only take the tablets in high summer to prevent my ankles from swelling in the heat. The rest of the year I wear boots (sheepskin ugly boots or DM style, fashion goddess that I am!) and that gentle pressure round my ankles seems to act like a very mild compression stocking and prevent any swelling.
